Jon Boyes -> Seguidillas vs Siguiriyas? (Oct. 11 2005 10:43:19)

Cuurently tuned in to the back-on-air 'Flamenco From Jerez' Internet station (which is great, by the way, real mix of old and new) when this came on:
Juan Diego, Fuera De Razon (Seguidillas).

Sounded exactly the same as Siguiriyas to me - same compas & it was played played phrygian por medio. I thought Seguidillas were considered (inferior) Spanish folk rather than flamenco.

Someone care to explain/put this in context for me?

Ta

Jon;

Seguidilla is an old Castilian folk dance and did not originate in Seville.

Notice the spelling is so similar to Sevillanas, as is the structure of Sevillanas. Here is a clip.

The Jota and other dances are somehow related with flamenco, even if remotely. It is not unusual for Andaluz to change the spelling and pronunciation of Castilian.

I am at a loss to realize that you heard a Siguiriyas that sounds like Seguidilla. Anything is possible.

My opinion is that since the pronunciation of the two words is so similar the spelling gets mixed up. I've seen many Siguiriyas labeled as Seguidillas on record labels.

I reckon you're right Phil - mislabelling on the playlist.

Thanks Tom for the background info.
