Guys,

Mixed up my first batch of hide glue last month. Went to use it last week and found it to be moldy. It must have been sitting for no more than a month or so. It was in a small mason jar with the top on.

Have you guys run into this? Does it have a short self life once mixed?

thanks

Troutie, if you have access to Guild of American Lutherie (GAL) articles, the spring of 1999 has an article titled "Stick With Hide Glue" by Frank Ford and Don MacRostie. It will tell you pretty much anything you'd like to know about hide glue. They do mention that prepared hide glue will keep about a month if kept refrigerated... They also say to throw out any moldy glue.

Cheers,
Dave

Very strict builders say that you should make a fresh mix every day. Most builders mix quite often. Meaning every 2 or 3 days.

Mold means out.
