britguy -> Advice on storage (Dec. 2 2012 14:09:55)

I store my guitars ( and a few old family violins, banjos, etc.) in a small bathroom that is never used as such. I installed a carpetted plywood sheet over the bath, which serves as the 'floor'. For humidity control I use an ultrasonic humidifier running on a 12-hour timer cycle that mantains about 38-40% humidity. My problem is I'm not sure about the best way to actually store the guitars so that I don't continually bang them around when taking one out or putting one back. Presently I have five guitars on stands, and two hanging by the headstock from the curtain rail. The stands take up all the available floor space and is already very tight, making it tricky to retrieve one guitar without knocking another. I'm wondering if I'd be better off installing another curtain rail and have them all hanging ( they could probably still bang each other?), or maybe build some kind of low shelf with separate partitions? How do the luthiers store their guitars? Are there any construction plans available?
