I store my guitars ( and a few old family violins, banjos, etc.) in a small bathroom that is never used as such. I installed a carpetted plywood sheet over the bath, which serves as the 'floor'. For humidity control I use an ultrasonic humidifier running on a 12-hour timer cycle that mantains about 38-40% humidity.

My problem is I'm not sure about the best way to actually store the guitars so that I don't continually bang them around when taking one out or putting one back.

Presently I have five guitars on stands, and two hanging by the headstock from the curtain rail. The stands take up all the available floor space and is already very tight, making it tricky to retrieve one guitar without knocking another.

I'm wondering if I'd be better off installing another curtain rail and have them all hanging ( they could probably still bang each other?), or maybe build some kind of low shelf with separate partitions?

How do the luthiers store their guitars?

Are there any construction plans available?

Rather than storing them on stands and hanging by the headstock, I would advise you to store them in cases when not in use. Cases would be preferable for avoiding damage, and for maintaining overall proper care.

Cheers,

Bill

Mr. Britguy; I agree totally with BarkellWH: Store in cases to avoid disasters and also to help with your humidity issues. The old traditional laminated wood cases also will soak up a little bit of moisture in the long run, and so, if the humidity drops, they will hold a reserve of moisture for a longer while as a safety net. The newer carbon fiber cases, etc. however, do not offer these reserves. Hang your socks from a shower rod.
