I can't find distilled water for my case humidifiers any more. I have seen "Purified" water. Is that okay. And for many years I just used tap water and never had a problem. What's the lowdown?

Ramon

Hola Ramon:

I always use distilled water in my 'guitar room' ultrasonic humidifier, as recommended to avoid mineral salts build-up, etc.

It is readily available at our local pharmacy stores; two bucks for a 3 litre container. Not sure why you're having a problem finding it locally?

But, you can always try making your own, using a room dehumidifier during the warm months, and storing the distilled water in plastic bottles. You can make a lot of distilled water during a warm summer.

My case humidifiers are a kitchen sponge with all the excess water squeezed
out, stuffed in a ziploc bag that's left open stuck in the case up under the tuners.
It's cheap, it works better than most of the "case humidifers" you buy, and I
could care less if they go bad. Replacements are cheap.

Never had a problem with a guitar either from too much or too little humidity
doing his. When the weather is super dry, I take old 35mm film containers
stuffed with damp sponge, and with holes punched in them and hang them
from the strings in the soundhole.

I have owned some of the expensive commercial products but concluded most
are glitzy crap ...

Regards,
Jeff

i personally think the distilled water requirement to be overkill for in-case humidifiers. i have heard the ultrasonic ones are not that good for one's health if one does not use purified water.

We have nice soft water out of the tap here. That's what I've been using.
