Anders Eliasson -> Panama rosewood (Nov. 21 2012 16:50:51)

This set of Panama rosewood is the last I have. Thats a petty because I really like it. Its some 10 - 20% lighter than East Indian rosewood but with a very nice high ringing taptone. Not to glassy, but more woody.. This should mean a slightly faster attack and less sustain.
I would have liked to buy more of this wood. But what happened is that I bought it some 7 years ago and stored and aged the wood for 4 years before making the first guitar with the wood. I liked it a lot and decided to buy more, but since then I have only been able to find sets of a much poorer quality. Flatsawn and expensive. So its another tonewood that I will not use anymore. But I´m going to enjoy building with this set. The color is very pretty. I´ll call it nut brown and it´ll make a beautifull contrast with a set of dark indian rosewood bindings.

Absolutely beautiful, I love your port-hole design as well.

BarkellWH -> RE: Panama rosewood (Nov. 21 2012 17:03:11)

It looks beautiful in its current, unfinished condition, Anders. I can't wait to see this beauty when she is completed and finished. Please post a photo of the finished instrument.

Cheers,

Bill

Sean -> RE: Panama rosewood (Nov. 21 2012 17:06:08)

I think every luthier has one of those, wish I had gotten more stories; can't find the same quality or it cost three times as much.[:@]

Anders Eliasson -> RE: Panama rosewood (Nov. 21 2012 19:36:45)

Sean, thats why I dont buy special woods anymore.
Cypress, EI rosewood and coral/padauk... And thats it. Its all wodds that has very good quality, that is not being overpriced or having legal problems.....

The soundport design is not mine. Its by foro member MrMagenta, who has kindly agreed that I may use the design. Thats great, because I simply cant come up with anything better myself.

TANúñez -> RE: Panama rosewood (Nov. 21 2012 19:47:17)

Wow that is beautiful!

TANúñez -> RE: Panama rosewood (Nov. 21 2012 21:10:34)

Anders is that spruce kerfing for the back lining?

Anders Eliasson -> RE: Panama rosewood (Nov. 22 2012 7:49:33)

No, its yellow cedar. I wish I didnt have to pay 30% in costum. I really like to work that wood. Its so stable and easy to work.

gerundino63 -> RE: Panama rosewood (Nov. 23 2012 10:09:39)

Looks very nice Anders!

If somebody ever wants to try it when it is finished, let me know....[;)]

ralexander -> RE: Panama rosewood (Nov. 23 2012 11:49:21)

Very nice, Anders ~ lots of visual character in that set. And congrats to Peter on his upcoming guitar!

If I ever win the lottery, one of my activities will be to pick a few of my favorite luthiers and take them wood shopping [:D] I suspect some of the best shopping would be out of the existing stock of other luthiers! Some of the steel string guys I know must be sitting on tens of thousands in wood at any given time.

Anders Eliasson -> RE: Panama rosewood (Nov. 23 2012 12:31:02)

And what if the luthier says: "No thanks, I dont want to build with wood I dont know"?
You know, I´m a bit like that.. An excentric squarehead...[sm=tongue.gif]

tijeretamiel -> RE: Panama rosewood (Nov. 23 2012 12:40:15)

That is looking very nice indeed.

Have you ever made a negra with Honduran Rosewood Anders?

ralexander -> RE: Panama rosewood (Nov. 23 2012 13:08:56)

Anders - I meant more like YOU go wood shopping and I would foot the bill [:D] Squarehead or not, would you turn that down?!

Anders Eliasson -> RE: Panama rosewood (Nov. 23 2012 14:08:56)

No negras with Honduran rosewood from me.

The thing with buying wood and even more heavy woods like rosewoods, is that you should stock and store it for a good time before you use it.
I´m basically bailing out when it comes to different woods. I will use Indian rosewood, Padauk and cypress for flamenco guitars. They are all healthy, well cut, reasonably priced, environmental more or less acceptable and more than anything, they sound darn good.
I thought that Panama rosewood would be an option because the first sets I bought were so good and real quatersawn rosewoods are not easy to find.... But it was a short imagination. Reality took me back down on earth again

Anders Eliasson -> RE: Panama rosewood (Nov. 23 2012 16:57:50)

here´s a picture of the back
Its not something spectacular, but I really like the color and with dark rosewood bindings, it makes a very beautifull contrast

That makes a lot of sense. I quite liked the sound of the Maple instruments you made too, but I think all your guitars sound fantastic!

Are you still planning to make some instruments with Mahogany?

In that particular thread it was mentioned somewhere about Cypress being used for a steel string guitar. I read a review in Acoustic Magazine (the UK version) of a Lakewood guitar with Cypress back and sides which got a excellent review.

Anders Eliasson -> RE: Panama rosewood (Nov. 24 2012 7:39:23)

I plan to build some steel strings with mahogany and maybe a flamenca negra just to test.

gerundino63 -> RE: Panama rosewood (Nov. 25 2012 11:41:55)

Thanks Ralexander!

Anders Eliasson -> RE: Panama rosewood (Feb. 12 2013 8:45:56)

The guitar is now finished and ready to move to the Neatherlands.

Thanks Anders! She looks beautiful!

To honour your work, I adapted my avatar....[:D]

koenie17 -> RE: Panama rosewood (Feb. 12 2013 9:37:26)

Wow! She´s beautifull. Great job Anders! and Gerundino congratiolations with your new guitar. I would love to hear how she sounds!

Sr. Martins -> RE: Panama rosewood (Feb. 12 2013 13:33:14)

Panama rosewood? Netherlands?

Iam pretty sure that guitar is going to a Van Halen fan [:D]

Wayne Brown -> RE: Panama rosewood (Feb. 12 2013 14:34:17)

I agree! It turned out just beautiful!

Anders Eliasson -> RE: Panama rosewood (Feb. 16 2013 16:00:07)

Thanks all of you

Here´s a short video.

I havent played for a year and i cant play more than 10 - 15 minuts before I get pain in my left hand middle finger, so the playing is mediocre. But thats what there is.
But its good enough to hear the voice and the potential of the guitar.

El Burdo -> RE: Panama rosewood (Feb. 16 2013 20:44:14)

Sounds lovely. Very strong. You look happy too!

Anders Eliasson -> RE: Panama rosewood (Feb. 18 2013 7:13:04)

Yes, I look happy because the guitar is VERY nice. Just as you say, very strong. Yet fast and easy to play.

tijeretamiel -> RE: Panama rosewood (Feb. 18 2013 12:00:16)

That's one of the finest sounding negras I've come across.

azamuner -> RE: Panama rosewood (Feb. 18 2013 12:51:18)

It does have an wonderful tone.

gerundino63 -> RE: Panama rosewood (Mar. 2 2013 11:22:16)

So, the guitar arrived at my home 8 days ago.

A wonderful instrument, a total Masterpiece!
The sound is incredible, loud, warm, and very flamenco.
The tone is extremely separated, and very balanced.
The soundport works wonderful. It gives a very nice effect (all the details were discussed here a lot)
In the restaurant where I play I have a lot of benefit from the soundhole.
Also when it is busy, you can hear youself play very well, what is very nice.
And you smell the guitar a lot when you play.....yummy :-)

The guitar itself is surprisingly light, a lot lighter than my Anders Negra from 2008.
The playability is superb, realy very good, I get the feeling I get the feeling I instantly play 15% better because of that.
Very fast response.

The planetary peggs works very nice. Smooth, the feel is just like ordinary peggs. ( but no slippering or heavy turning, and a ratio in tuning from 1:4)
Also it looks like the "direct" responce in sound you have a bit with peggs, goes for the planetary peggs too.

So, as you read I am very happy with the guitar.

Thanks Anders!

This is interesting to me, because I have the same problem, perhaps worse. Since doing a lot of guitar building over the past year, I can't bend my left middle finger all the way without a lot of pain, and sometimes if I do by accident, it gets stuck (painfully) and I have to wrench it up with the other hand--painfully. I can play some things where I am not bending it too much, but using that finger while barring is nearly impossible. I attribute this injury to thoughtlessly holding things tightly with my left hand while planing or sanding or polishing, etc. with the other hand. I am trying to use a vise more. I hope we get better.
