I just purchased a used guitar that has a 1 mm deep string ding that was caused by the first treble string. I do not have any problems with the look of the ding. However, I read elsewhere on the foro that it is possible for for a string ding to develop into a crack that goes under the bridge. I was thinking of maybe having a professional do a proactive repair to protect the bridge area. It is possible that the soundboard is still 100% structurally sound, but I have no way of knowing for sure. Are there any reasons against doing an elective repair to this area of the soundboard? Or would the soundboard basically be as good as it is now after the repair?

Usually not, string dings are almost always topical dings. I'd leave it alone.

'If it ain't broke don't fix it' is a good guitar owner attitude. Many guitarists get neurotic about the wrong stuff. What did you get?

I think you have mixed up a few things. Dings normally stay the way they are. In the past, there has been some discussions on lower bout cracks that might grow under the bridge.
maybe thats where you got it from.

The guitar is an Hermanos Sanchis Lopez Solea. I will necro-post the old thread so you can see where I read the string ding creating a crack. Thanks guys

Racking my brain now as to who's guitar it was but I remember that thing. THe string ding hit behind the bridge and seemed superficial. THen one day CRACK....all along the top from bridge down stemming from that little weakness. I am sure humidity was the main issue, but it sure was a scary freak issue. It was one of my friends for sure, but drawing a blank now.

Here is just a bit of information......There is a luthier on youtube that adds a strip of clear pickguard material adhered just behind the bridge to protect the top from such dings. The dings do happen. I had one on a classical that I owned, but it never developed into a crack.

Thanks Ricardo, that is scary that a superficial ding can cause such damage. The story sure got my attention, especially since I love this guitar and the model seems hard to come by these days. I'll cross my fingers and hope for the best.
