To all Foro members in the San Francisco area, congratulations on the Giants winning the World Series in four straight games over the Detroit Tigers. I have always been a Giants fan. Growing up as a kid in Phoenix, Arizona, I began following the Giants when they were still in New York. They always spent spring training in Phoenix, and my father and I would go out to see them play the Cleveland Indians, who trained in Tucson. I continued following the Giants when they moved to San Francisco in 1958, and I still follow them.

One of my biggest thrills during a Giants spring training game in Phoenix was getting a ball signed by Willie Mays as he was entering the dugout from center field. My father always thought Mickey Mantle was the all-around best player in those days, and I always thought it was Willie Mays. My father, who always encouraged discussion of history and politics at the dinner table, would occasionally consent to digress and discuss ("argue" would better describe it) the virtues of Willie Mays vs. Mickey Mantle, at bat and on the field.

I shall have a glass of Jerez fino, muy seco, this evening and toast the Giants as World Series champions.

Cheers,

Bill

Yeah, pretty amazing. I grew up in SF and remember seeing all the greats in the 60's-Mays, McCovey, Marichal, etc.
In those days, we'd get to the stick early and hang out on top of the dugout. The players would come out and give us autographs and chat with us.
As great as those guys were, today's Giants are obviously even better.
And the great thing about today's team is how well they represent SF in that they are some colorful characters........

I'm not Giants fan historically because I grew up in the LA area, the Giants arch nemesis are the Dodgers. So I grew up in the era of Steve Garvey on first and Tommy Lasorda as third base coach for the Dodgers.

I remember going to a Dodgers Giants game when I was a kid and seeing after the Dodgers had won, the Giants marching out to the bus for the ride to the airport to go home. There were no fans killing one another in the parking lot and we waved at the Giants and they waved back.

I think the Giants have been playing very good baseball and I watched most of the playoffs and the Series and I am happy they won. I have to say I think the Tigers were not playing the same level ball. I like a series that is more drawn out and closer in score. I enjoyed the playoffs with the Cardinals much more.

Willie Mays is one of my all time favorites and I did get to see a game when I was a little, little kid in which he made a terrific catch off the back fence. I would not be able argue whether or not he was better than anyone else, but he was pretty great for me

Say hey Bill

In the early 1950s we went to see the first game of the season with the old Washington Senators. President Eisenhower was there to throw out the first ball. Everybody liked Ike. He was at the rail, ready to throw out the first ball, smiling that famous grin and waving.

Then attention shifted to the box just behind ours. At first I thought everybody was looking at us, but there was no reason in the world for that to be happening. Then I realized they were looking at the box behind us.

There was Joe DiMaggio with his wavy dark hair and brilliant, debonair smile, drawing more attention than one of America's most loved presidents. Wow!

When I lived in the Bay Area in the 1980s, people still reminisced about when Joltin' Joe played on the minor league San Francisco Seals.

Congratulations, San Francisco!

Had it been a few years later, Richard, you might have had Marilyn Monroe sitting in back of you, along with Joltin' Joe, as well. Wow, again!

Cheers,

Bill
