FlamencoDoc -> Gypsy Flamenco Documentary (Oct. 22 2012 21:33:14)

We have an extreme passion for gypsy flamenco music, and we feel confident that the film we've been working on will resonate with all lovers of flamenco.

We've been working on an extensive documentary, entitled "When I Grow Up, I Want to be Flamenco," which is about the remarkable people and culture that has been misunderstood and discriminated against throughout history. With over 50 hours of amazing footage already shot, our film offers an in depth look at this remarkable culture thanks to unprecedented access to people, locations, and music from France.

How can you help?

If you have a blog or website, we would love for you to share a little bit about the film with your fans/followers, and if you feel so inclined, help support the film on our recent Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to finish the English language version of the film. We have already completed a preliminary French language version of the documentary that targets a European audience and we are now seeking to complete an English language version that will be geared to a US audience.

With your help, we can raise awareness of these people through the film, as well as reach our funding goal and to reach a wider audience. In return for your contribution, we have a list of rewards matched up with the amount of money you contribute. They include – but are no limited to – Digital download of the completed English language version of the documentary when it is released, a signed poster, your name on the screen and DVD credits, 2 tickets to a screening and post-panel discussion of the film, credit at end of film, or even an Associate Producer credit and profile creation in IMDB. The rewards are contingent up on what level you or your fans choose to support.
To support our film on Kickstarter, just click on this link: http://kck.st/QnB2mZ. For more information on our film, visit our website at http://bit.ly/TvUK0V.

We would be happy to provide you with access to the direct, producer, writers and/or musicians, if need be, to interview and share with your readers.

Thank you for your time, consideration, and support of great music and people.

Cool documentary... although based on the trailer I would say this is not gypsy FLAMENCOS these are the french RUMBEROS....a whole different genre of music, although closely related. Another good doc on this subject was TIERRA GITANA that focuses on the Gypsy Kings and family....again that is not flamenco music, it's usually called GIPSY RUMBA or Rumba Gitana. Flamenco Gitano centers in Andalucia Spain. I admit those types of french gipsy do consider what they do "flamenco" and try to interpret certain flamenco forms occasionally (distorted versions usually taken from recordings), but important distinction is actual flamencos and aficionados that study flamenco never consider that genre in southern France "flamenco". Of course this distinction in no way takes away from the fact the genre has true artistic merit and cultural depth, and of course the way of life gipsies live all through europe is similar.

well said Ricardo. I had the same feeling. Just want to add that there're a few families in France strongly linked with the "real" andalu stuff. So it's not rumbero exclusive in France. If you have an opportunity to speak with Cristo Cortes (I heard that he often work in USA), ask him about that matter [;)]
But I'm pretty sure that these families haven't been approched for this doc.

The word Gypsy should be capitalized showing that it refers to a race, the Romani, not the Hollywood stereotype. This shows respect. Romani scholars prefer in most cases that the word Gypsy not be used, since it came from Egyptian. When the Hindu living in Northwest India (Romani) were driven out by the Muslims and forced to seek refuge in other countries, they were mistaken for being Egyptians because of their dark skin. The word Gypsy came from this mistaken identity. Because of its stereotypes and negative connotation to much of society, we as flamencos need to show all the respect possible to this race that shared this music with us.
