athrane77 -> Stupid question about Rasgueado (Oct. 9 2012 17:49:48)

When I play the A-M-I-I rasgueado on the E-chord e.g. should all strings sound?(except the low e-string because i normally hold my thumb on this string)

Yes and no. (Stupid answer [:D])

Well, you should learn to put emphasis on different strings. Playing mostly the basses, mostly the trebles and all strings.
Its fun to practice things like that. There´s a huge difference in sound and feel between mostly basses played hard and mostly trebles played light and fast.

But i should learn to make also the high e string sound?

Ricardo -> RE: Stupid question about Rasgueado (Oct. 9 2012 21:00:33)

no. Abanico type rasgueados can make use of all 6 strings (wrist action) but finger rasguedos are more colorful BECAUSE they target smaller groups of strings. For example with thumb bent you are actually snapping into the bass strings specifically (A and D strings mainly plus 3rd and 2nd are touched) and i up catches only top 2 or three strings for brightness. With thumb straight you can actually skip over the bass string and get mainly 4 3 2 1 strings down and only 1,2,3 up for a brighter overall sound....

When doing i a i a finger catches mainly mids like 4th 3rd and 2 strings, i up gets bright sound 1,2,3 strings, then flicking i down only gets basses 5,4 and a bit of 3. so you get an overall round sound when going fast.

What Ricardo and I say is basically the same. And yes, you should also be able to make the high E string sound. Especially in Alegrias it gives a lot of "ring" to the sound, but also in other ´por arriba´ palos like Soleá and Fandangos de Huelva, it makes the sound brighter and more flamenco.

for malaguena (sp?) hitting only the bass strings, especially the low e string, can be effective but it will require you to lift up your thumb and have your right hand unsupported. sabicas does this on his malaguena with an interesting twist where he is going up and down the fretboard.
