Hey, next week i have to do a presentation in spanish class about flamenco. We should have choosen one topic which is somehow related to Spain. So I decided to work on a presentation about flamenco. I don't know how far I should explain musical details about the topic (like compás and palos)
First I wanted to explain what Flamenco is and what it is not. But then i need to explain what compás is. This could be quite difficult to understand for a non-musician who don't even know what a 4/4 beat is.
How would you guys arrange the presentation and what are the main facts that should not missing in it?

This are my first ideas:
Definition->what is flamenco
The elements of Flamenco->baile,cante,toque
History->influences of different cultures
Music->the palos (maybe go through a letra)
Compás->palmas e.g.
Important artists in flamenco->PdL, Camarón e.g
Modern Flamenco from today, influences from other music-genres like jazz etc.

If they're German students you should be able to get pretty technical without too much issue no?[;)]
Play a martinete to reinforce that flamenco is a particular beat with a particular melody and that the whole guitar showing off thing is somewhat recent in flamenco history. Make everyone clap with the anvil to give them an idea of how long of a musical phrase one compas is.
And just my two cents I would play down the whole jazz thing(one sentence should suffice) and talk more about the whole Ida y vuelta world and how it's kInda not flamenco and kinda is.

I wouldn't get technical, Jof. These are not music students who dig into the technical aspects of music. I would describe and define flamenco as consisting of Cante, Baile, and Guitar, emphasizing that Cante is the basic root of flamenco in Spain, although we in the West tend to emphasize guitar and dance.

It would be good to let them know that there is a definite framework of palos and compas that defines flamenco, as opposed to "Spanishy" sounding works, but I wouldn't get too into the weeds on that. Again, these are not music students.

Finally, a bit of history, including the influence of Moors, Jews, and Gypsies, would interest them, I'm sure. Have fun!

Bill is right and more realistic.
I still say blast a martinete on level 10 to see their faces. [:D]

I have done this many times. Video works best; a video of gitano children dancing por bulerías in the street, surrounded by their families, followed by the famous duel of Manuel Morao y Agujetas por martinete in the film by Saura is perfecto. Forget compás.

That's my experience as well. I always try to show it's a celebration of live, enjoyed by all ages in the company of friends and family.

Muchisimas Gracias, your ideas are much better than mine, because the most important thing about my presentation should be, to give an overall impression of gitano live and their music.
Should I show them a famous letra?

I like this video, it might be more hip then an old guy pounding an anvil and another old guy singing. Also it could show how it's something gitano's could just do sitting around having drinks, no expensive instruments needed.

Keep it simple and short.
Basic rules for a presentation:

First you tells 'em what you're gonna say.
Next you says it.
Then you tells 'em what you said.

You can tell them pretty much aanything about flamenco and they'll buy it - it's a german school class, they have no clue about the topic at all. In the end you just want to get your good grade.
