I change the bass strings every 4-5 weeks but never the trebbles, I've got millions of trebble strings lying around unopened. Then I think OH! they must be ancient, so I change a full set and spend the next few days (best part of a week) constantly re-tuning up to concert. Is this normal, do you leave the trebbles or do you all change a full set every time? Cheers Jim.

Yeah Jim, I do the same. It's usually the D string that wears first, but if you change only the D then it sounds overbright and unbalanced so I've got to change all three. The trebles seem to last for months. A friend of mine was going to the States so I asked him to bring me back 10 sets of Savarez "Red Card" which are about half the price of the UK over there. Guess what? When I opened them, he'd got me the ones with the big, fat white wound 2nd & 3rds! They're horrible! Thank goodness I don't play much picado, for it would be like trying to play picado on a cello! LOL! Also a lot of "finger noise". Anyway, I got 9 sets left, so I guess I'm gonna be playing them for a long time to come. (Ye ken us Aberdonians....canny waste onythin' LOL!) Ron

Hi Ron, The Red Card's, I remember them well, do they still leave a red mark over the bridge saddle? I had forgotten about the wound 2nd and 3rd, I remember they used to make ridges on the sides of my index nail. String technology seems to have come a long way, I always liked Savarez and still prefer them over any other string. the Corum's are great. I thought you were a Glasberdonian? LOL Cheers Jim.

Hi Jim Yes, its normal for the basses to die a lot quicker. My supplier has just started doing my D'Addarios in sets of 9 (three extra basses), so I am a happy bunny. Jon

Hi Guys: I get my strings by mail order from "strings by mail" they are on the net. Anyway, because the basses wear out so much faster (for me it's like 10:1 ratio of basses to trebles) I order 10 sets of just bass strings at a time. I usually get the hannabach 827s and they come in different tensions. I like them, and strings by mail is very responsive. I don't know if they ship to the UK, but you might drop them an e-mail and find out? Regards, Paul PS: Jim...
