britguy -> 6 string ukelele tuning? (Sep. 26 2012 13:51:01)

I recently bought a Yamaha Guitarlele - a 6-string ukelele - for use as a practice tool when on long trips in my van. (Wife driving, of course). Actually works pretty good for right-hand excersizes, and rasgueados. Bit cramped on the left hand, but feasible at low positions. Dimensions are; 432mm scale length, nut width 48mm, string spacing at bridge saddle 44mm. The face looks like solid wood, and it has fan bracing. Not bad for the price (under $100). I'd like to make it "feel" more like a guitar for practicing purposes, and would appreciate any comments on the string guage(s). tuning, etc. Right now I have some old nonedescript medium guage strings, tuned about a fifth lower than standard guitar tuning. Seems to work O.K. but I'm wondering if I can make it better? Any recommendations on stringing, tuning, whatever?
