Skai -> String guage and Sound (Sep. 19 2005 3:30:43)

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to find out how string guage and tension actually affects the sound of your picado, alzapua, rasguedo etc. As for feel and playability, it's actually quite obvious to me while the changes in tone when different guages are used is rather subtle to me.

From what I know, using higher tensions will reduce buzzing but how else does it change your sound?

Thanks,
Cheston

same brand, higher tension = more "signal", i.e. louder tone. Of course you have to invest more physical power to generate the tone but low tension strings cannot really exceed a certain head level which is lower than the level reached by high tension strings.
