I just had a string break while my guitar was in its case. This is the second time it has happened on this guitar. It has been the D string both times. Has this happened to anybody else? What can cause this?

bad strings? sharp edges on the bridge?

In the case or out, the D string is more likely to break because it is the weakest of the six strings. Did they break both times at the tie block? Between the nut and the saddle?

Cheers,

Bill

I have a spruce/Brazilian Manuel Contreras Sr. "doble tapa" classical. Several times the A-string broke at the bridge saddle while the guitar was in the case. I looked at the saddle, but couldn't see any sharp edge or roughness. After a few months I took all the strings off and polished the bone saddle with some 600 grit sandpaper. No more problems.

I've had it happen twice recently. Last one was a D string, I think the other was a B. The B string broke near the tuner, but the D appears to have come "unravelled" near the bridge.

The string broke at the bridge both times. The first time it was a set of D'Addario. The core broke but the metal winding stayed intact and just unraveled. This time it was a set of Hannabach. The core and the metal winding broke. I'll try polishing up the saddle. Maybe I'll replace it.
