estebanana -> Have a toast to Ron, or meet for tea... (Sep. 9 2012 5:51:52)

Hi All,

Last night Bill Barkell was passing through San Francisco on his way home from being overseas. We met at an old famous SF bar called Edinburg Castle, it just happened to be near his hotel.

We talked for a couple of hours about the foro, gently gossiping about all of you [:D] and toasted Ron's memory two or three times. I'm a bit foggy on how many times exactly, and frankly have been a bit foggy all day.

It was wonderful to meet Bill, and besides talking about the foro he and I shared our experiences about Micronesia where we have both spent time. Bill also convinced me not to put off finishing my reading of Lawrence Durrel's famous four interwoven novels called The Alexandria Quartet. Thanks for the homework assignment Bill.

What I said to Bill about Ron is that I did not know him for very long, but in the week before he passed away i did say to myself several times as I was working, well I look forward to getting to know him better as time goes by. Little did I know there would be no more time. It makes me sad to know that that humor a wisdom is not around to consult, get to know.

So if any of you get together for the occasion of meeting someone from the foro, have a drink to Ron and let it be known here. We should grab the opportunities to spend time together. Tell a story.

Hear, hear.

The recent passing of Ron and Anders' wife, Sole have emphasised that we are real people in a real world, with lives and loves, fortune and bad luck, hopes and dreams.

I try and meet members when I can, including GJ in Venice, Kate and Anders in Granada, El Craic, Estela, Sean and Fergusito in Jerez, Stephen Hill in La Herradura and Jim Opfer in Bath (before I moved here) amongst others. All really nice people.

I hope enough people show interest in Ron's Boot Camp for next Spring, where we can share some more stories and put faces to avatars.

It was indeed my great good fortune to be able to meet up with and share a few pints and stories with Stephen in San Francisco. And I'm sure we toasted Ron at least three times!

This is what makes the Foro so interesting, the members who participate. We all share a love of flamenco (and other genres of music), but each member has different interests and experiences that make for compelling conversation. To be able to share an evening with a first-rate luthier (not only of guitars, but of Bulgarian Tamburas, and God knows what else), a literary maven, a world traveler, and all-around nice guy was an honor and a treat. Thanks, Stephen!

Cheers,

Bill
