Stumbled across this video while doing some letra research. I’ve heard some slow alegrias before, but that’s typically been a kind of laid-back, eased-off thing that’s at least somewhere in the alegrias tempo wheelhouse.

But this, this is some straight Sippin' on the Syrup stuff.

The tempo’s real slow, but I think there's something about the heavy, minimalist strumming in the accompaniment that makes it feel even slower. And it’s probably just knuckle on the table top golpes mixed in with the palmas, but it sounds as though there might even a bit of footwork in there. Seeing someone dance to this would be kinda psychedelic.

Anyway, hadn't heard this before and figured others would be interested.

Hey it seems pretty normal speed to me....or at least well with in the "normal" range. Maybe because playing for baile I am so used to this tempo for some dancers. For example when I played for esperanza, she wanted it very up tempo compared to what I am used to playing. Also, I would have expected more adventurous compas from Oliver, as per some of our solea topics but there was really just one odd spot, the rest was pretty square.

Really?

Sounds exactly like some of the older (1950's- 1960's) recordings I have of Alegrias. And also about the same speed as I was originally taught in Madrid at that time.

I dont find it too slow at all. . . Maybe most players today play it too fast?

Huh, alright, I just got the metronome out and this is somewhere in the 135 range. [8|]

Man, it just felt so slow to me, kind of like when you turn a turntable off with the needle still on the record and it drags to a stop. This whole thing just had a strange dragging, slowing feel to me.

Hmn........[8|] alright, false alarm! Thanks for the input guys. Ignore me and carry on! [:D]

That seems within the typical tempo range. And in any case, Alegrias can be played slowly very effectively. Here is a gorgeous Alegrias, played relatively slowly.
