AC needs a list of Ron's favourite music, artist, tracks etc. for the funeral. Please trawl through your memories, the other threads and the forum search to help where you can and post them here, so we don't get lost.

I don't know if it counts for much but I remembered this Thread-

http://www.foroflamenco.com/tm.asp?m=173319&appid=&p=&mpage=1&key=ron%2Ccamaron&tmode=&smode=&s=#173335

I also seem to remember him liking Camaron and Tomatito alot.

I know he was into some guitar-based sixties blues/folk stuff, Bert Jansch, that sort of thing. We once got into a discussion about Jackson C. Frank, about whom Ron expressed a fondness for his song Blues Run the Game. I've got all the Frank stuff and can send some to you if you want, thought it is pretty depressing stuff.

Ah: "Jansch was my first true guitar inspiration back in 1966."

So, definitely Jansch! He mentioned specifically liking the songs 'Finches' and 'Strollin' down the Highway.'

Ron's "Desert Island Albums":

Bert Jansch (first album)
Paco Peña (the incredible Paco Peña)
Camaron/Tomatito (Paris live album)
Paco de Lucia (Fantasia Flamenca)
B.B. King (Completely Well)
Beatles (Sergeant Pepper)
Beatles (Please Please Me)

Oops, he made it a "top ten" later in the thread [:D]

Beach Boys (Pet Sounds)
John Coltrane (Favorite Things)
David Oistrakh ( Bach - Violin Concerto )

A fellow Scott: Davey Graham

I also recall that he expressed annoyance at British "Trad Folk" type stuff.

"I too was a keen "folkie" from about 14-16 and had records by the Carter Family, Ramblin' Jack Elliot, Jesse Fuller, Rev Gary Davis etc as well as some of the Blues legends"

Also: "...about Jansch & Renbourne etc....I loved their guitar playing but was never keen on their singing styles and lost interest in them when they formed Pentangle. " So, just instrumental stuff from those guys...

"I also hate this "Happy Clapalong" Scottish stuff too (like Johnny Lad) and the Corries etc." Man, Ron sure did like a lot of stuff, but he hated plenty of stuff, too! [:D] Good luck putting all this together, Simon!

Sorry, I assembled this post in multiple edits, so it's a bit jumbled...

Thanks Adam, I think that helps. Typical Ron [;)]

Pgh_flamenco -> RE: Ron's favourite music please (Aug. 30 2012 2:33:24)

I think this Rodena by Paco Pena would be fitting: http://www.foroflamenco.com/post.asp?do=reply&messageID=209210&smode=1&tmode=1&p=&toStyle=tm

A song from Ricardo's album as well as GJ's Taranta would be fitting as well due to the connection Ron had with them.

Could somebody find a Peternera--perhaps from Paco Pena?

xirdneH_imiJ -> RE: Ron's favourite music please (Aug. 30 2012 9:29:21)

i've composed two short peteneras earlier this year, i would be honored to "donate" either of them for the cause

srshea -> RE: Ron's favourite music please (Aug. 30 2012 18:06:49)

Remembering that Ron often spoke of making a lot of his early flamenco discoveries by listening to Spanish radio via shortwave and recording some of that stuff by primitive means for posterity (which I imagine was probably a pain in the ass to do way back when.)

I’ve found one such recording, but I could swear that he uploaded a few of these. Maybe not. Simon, don’t know if you have a special behind-the-Wizard’s-curtain search feature to track down that kind of thing…

The audio quality might not match the level of other stuff played at the memorial, but it could be pretty sweet to play some stuff that he cared enough about to record over international waters some forty-five years ago. Probably some tapes of that stuff around his home…

I just sent you a copy of Blues Run the Game, by Jackson C. Frank, which was one of Ron's favorite songs since way back in the sixties. I sent it to Simon earlier today, assuming he was putting together the music, so you've both got it now. Lemme know if it didn't show up or the attachment doesn't work. It's coming from a yahoo address with my name in it.

Adam

Florian -> RE: Ron's favourite music please (Sep. 5 2012 6:45:20)

thanks buddy, i am just arranging them in order and making sure volume is consistent and sending them to Simon anyway, so if he has it good

I used it in the video, Adam. Thanks.
