I thought I had found this link here but I can't find it so I guess I did not, if it is somewhere, sorry for the double post.
So just wanted to share that this picado exercise, it is really making a difference for me in terms of speed and it has not been that long since I've added it to my practice. So might be useful to some of you too!
By the way this is not about the way he plays his picado, mid or large joint, it is about the exercise itself [:)]

Totally agree about his staccato approach of stopping notes with next finger when alternating. Been talking about this as the "secret" to speed for years.
But I have to disagree with his left hand concept, playing so close to fret wire, AND the lean hand back ala violin stye approach. I think playing should be more 'on top" and square in the frets. Finally, i can tell he contours his nails by his tone, rather than file flat, which would provide him a more crisp tone than the bright brittle sound he is getting now. But he would have to grow out his nails on the edges first. (see nail shape topics).

Hi there ricardo, can you emphasise on this? I've always been told to play very close to the fret, without muting it of course, and there's where it gives the best sound and playing away from the fret can cause buzz.

This is a great lesson , I was tempted to post it myself . I to prefer to keep my fingers at more of a right angle to the fret board . Playing closer to the fret will not improve your tone ,but the amount of energy needed to push the string down . Once again great video I hope he does a lot more .

Juanito was the first flamenco guitarist I met when I came to live in the US in the 90s. We remained friends all these years. At some point we lived just a couple of houses from each other and had regular composition sessions for the duet we planned. Then I moved and entered the conservatory so the project never happened, although we did share the stage a few times. He's a great guy and really knows about the technique because every time I see him he plays better and better. I agree with the things he says about the positioning of the left hand fingers; my father (who gave lessons to both of us) teaches the same thing.

Interesting. Maybe you mean more the fret wire thing, but I was more concerned with the leaning back of left hand. I watched your vids and noticed you do the lean back thing a bit....obvious not when doing stretches where you have to be on top. Anyway, it's interesting to note you guys have relatively longer fingers than some, and also, keep the fingers close together like almost touching. (juanito implies playing on top on the lower frets doing half steps your next finger will not be forward enough in the fret and thats because he keeps fingers close together). When I play "on top" basically in a similar position as if you had to barre and stretch, the fingers dont need to be close...but the wrist has to come out more. I adapted this sort of naturally although I did notice my fav flamenco guys doing it that way vs my old electric guitar days ...it all started with the glaring difference when playing whole steps where the 3rd is used instead of 2nd finger which automatically forces a more "on top" position where wrist comes out. To this day there are many things I fight over if I will use 2 or 3 for a run.
