I have a wedding gig coming up soon and they want me to play solo guitar music for one hour during the cocktail hour. Then they want me to do a short performance with dancers.

The problem is that the two performances are two hours apart. Should I charg the usual rate, some sort of discounted rate, or nothing for those two hours where I just do nothing and hang out?

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

You might want to check with other area pros to see the common practice in your area. But after considering that, it is your time and you choose what to charge.

yes you have to take all this things into consideration ( how far, are they feeding you, what are they like...do they mistake you for a waiter or are they the nice type of people to fix you a table and invite you to eat and enjoy yourself too...)...they are booking you for that time so u cant exactly do another job in between if the opportunity arised..u cant get drunk in between, u cant truly relax, you are working...

discounted its ok yes...your call by how much...between 50 % - 70%...i dont think its unreasonable at all

It all depends on the circumstances....

The pic tells my opinion on the topic:

I would charge for your total time invested in the event. That means they bought your time even when you are not playing. To only charge for two hours when your time invested is more like 4 or 5 is not a good business practice. Of course there are real world considerations such as what others charge for a similar event but you got to get paid and thats the bottom line.

thanks guys! this gave me some clarity on the issue.

i'm getting pretty grumpy about having to load the car, drive around, wait around, etc, blah blah, so i should definitely take all these things into consideration.

i've decided to give a discounted rate. it seems like the most fair option. also if i charge the same amount that i would if i were to actually do some work, they might not be able to afford it and i wouldn't get the gig at all.
