Thanks to everyone for all the advice here, it was really reassuring.

So the outcome.....

I emailed the luthier to say I was not happy with the guitar.

I was preparing myself for some kind of battle but he swiftly responded and tried to rectify the problem. Within a few days he had booked a flight to come to Manchester and exchange the guitar.

He booked into a local hotel and spent two nights in Manchester (on days with particularly bad weather) and came to my house and swapped the guitar for an altogether nicer guitar without any problems.

We went for coffee, played a bit, chatted and that was about it. Amazingly swapping this guitar was the only reason he flew to the UK !

One reason the guitar was not up to his normal standard is that I had originally planned to be in Spain in the summer and pick it up. As I had only ordered it in January it was actually a very tight schedule and he had a summer build up.

So I am now very happy and awaiting my first ding.

If I were to go through the process again I would ...

Visit and talk in person if possible
Never rush a luthier
Ask for updates along the journey, photos etc

If you don't mind I will withhold the Luthiers name from this thread as I feel his response was so brilliant I would not want his name and this thread to appear in a google search.

I will try and lurk less and post more so you the curious amongst you should see the guitar on here soon enough.

Thanks again for all the help

What a great outcome.

When you brought the guitar to me to look at, I was very surprised that he supplied it in that condition, but you've explained the reasons.

And in the end, its worked out very well for you. I think you've been a very patient customer and you have an excellent relationship with your luthier.

Well done to you both.

Well, well, happy ending.

Thats good and its ok that you dont want to name the builder. No reason to throw dirt. It was kind of him to correct his error.
BUT dont forget that he tried to cheat you..
Then afterwards, you may drink as many cups of coffee you like, but the question remains: Would you recommend a friend to buy a guitar from this guy?
