Argaith -> New bridge for a 3/4 guitar? (Jul. 29 2012 6:57:15)

Hi folks,

Here the situation: my wife has bought a cheap battered acoustic guitar from a charity shop for our 2.5 year old son who cries for a guitar whenever I or his older sister get ours out! The guitar doesn't have a bridge! It has some funny metal thingy hinged and screwed to the guitar.

Not that he's old enough to even try to play or any thing like that but I'd like to make the guitar look like a real thing! I need a small bridge (approximately 160mm wide). Does anyone know where would I find such a thing? Any advice on how to fit it? I suppose I'll have to take a section of the finish where the bridge would sit with a cutting knife to expose some flesh so I can glue the bridge to the body.

Thanks for your advice in advance.

A

David Dyke in the uk sells factory made bridges they are about £15 I think. Madinter in Spain will no doubt sell them too. Getting one to you specs will be a tall order but all you need is a saw and some sand paper to make the mods.

The metal hinged thing sounds like a tailpiece, the strings attach to this and pass over a wooden bridge which sits on the top and is only retained by string pressure.
Since there is no area where the finish has been removed, it seems likely that a fixed bridge was not originally fitted.
You could just put a triangular crossection length of wood in there to act as a bridge, probably all it deserves.
The bracing, if any, may be all wrong for installing a glued on classical style bridge

Chaps,

Thanks a lot for your advice.

Jeff - you are right, there has not been a bridge in place ever.
Considering what a 2.5 year old kid may do to a guitar and your comments about the bracing, I will take your advice about the triangular piece of wood to act as bridge/saddle. It's cheap and cheerful[;)]

Thanks again.
