Graeme -> Scale runs? (Aug. 27 2005 15:53:42)

Hi there.
Does anyone have any good scale runs (preferably up and down the neck) that they'd like to share? Here's one I enjoy; great picado practice and warm-up. Graeme

Hi Graeme , this one i use as an exercise really part of the idea is from G nunez book but i changed it so that it ends where it startes so that you can do it without pause in the sound:

|-----------------------------------3-5-7-8-7-5---------------------------------------
|----------------------------3-5-6---------------8-6-5--------------------------------
|--------------------2-4-5-----------------------------7-5-4--------------------------
|-------------2-3-5-------------------------------------------7-5-3-2-----------------
|---0-2-3-5---------------------------------------------------------- 5-3-2-0--------
|3----------------------------------------------------------------------------4-1-0-1-4
i m i m i.......

continues...

|----------------0-4-7-13-12-10-----------------------------------------------10-12
|--------------0-----------------13-12-10-9--------------------------------9--------
|------------1---------------------------------9-8------------------------10----------
|---0-3-1-2----------------------------------------12-10-9--------9-12-------------
|-2----------------------------------------------------------11-12--------------------
|---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
m i m i

continues........

|-10-8-7---------------------------------------------------------------5-7-5-3--------
|--------10-8-7--------------------------------------------------5-6-8-------- 6-5-3-
|----------------9-7---------------------------------------4-5-7---------------------5
|--------------------10-9-7---------------------------5-7-----------------------------
|----------------------------10-8-7-------------5-7-8--------------------------------
|------------------------------------10-8-5-7-8--------------------------------------

continues...

|---------------------------------
|---------------------------------
|-4------------------------------
|----5-3-2---------------------- .... start over again if you want
|-----------5-3-2---------------
|------------------5-3-----------

theres alot of cool scales ideas in that

If anyone else does some can you upload a soundfile also, please to get an idea what is sopossed to sound like.

I did a soundfile for mine, I always get slowed down at the transition jumping from 4th fret to the 13th but i keep working on narowing the pause between the notes down.

the second effect is the estern european in me, i am starting to like doing that over fast solear footwork or buleria, works best with a second guitar ofcourse, and it might not be everyones cup of tea but then again neither is most of the stuff i play but thats never stoped me before [;)]

Graeme -> RE: Scale runs? (Aug. 28 2005 11:04:22)

Thanks Florian, just the kind of thing I was after. I've not sat down properly with it yet, but initially I'm struggling a bit with spotting the position changes. I'll get serious with it later on today though.

I've just posted an audio file for my scale run over at:
http://www.foroflamenco.com/tm.asp?m=20552&p=1&tmode=1&smode=1
(and thanks Florian for your kind comment on that).

How about some more......anyone?

Graeme

Hola

These runs would be a lot easier to learn with fingerings, but I suppose it would be difficult to include them?

Sean

Graeme -> RE: Scale runs? (Aug. 28 2005 11:30:43)

Hi Sean,
My TAB has roman numerals above it to show lh position changes (for example: VII shows position change so that 1st finger lh is positioned at 7th fret, 2nd finger at 8th, etc.).
Think this is standard notation. Hope it helps, anyway.
Graeme

I uploaded another audio with some of the scales and effects i use in escobilla , i think most of them are in the scale I wrote down

anyone got any nice scales for buleria or tangos ?

Ricardo -> RE: Scale runs? (Aug. 28 2005 23:54:59)

This is the last run from Aspan off of Passion Grace and Fire, Paco and trio. It is based on Bb Lydian dominant (or F melodic minor) and I think is taken from Shakti's "India".

Thanks Ricardo !! I am saving all those scales to text for myself.

just lookeed at it, bloody hell 17th fret [:)] I am not making any commitments with this one but i will try it [:)]

Florian -> RE: Scale runs? (Aug. 29 2005 7:56:24)

If everyone contribuites imagine how usefull it would be for all of us to collectivly write down all the cool scales we like and be able to have the all writen down togheder and save it all right next to Ricardo's flamenco chord dictionary it could become kind like the first flamenco real book.

All the scales and chords we can all think off, writen down togheder I know i would benefit immensly.

Florian -> RE: Scale runs? (Aug. 29 2005 14:04:47)

Hi again , this one is not much to look at but listen to the audio we taped from the lesson I think hes one of the greatest most complete guitarist of around David Conoduele (when i say complete I mean folows cante, dance wickedly, then brakes out into the most cristal clear clean falseta) the other guitarist like that is Evas husband Paco Jarano this guitarists are all in a league of they'r own, they all probably wanna play like Paco but i dont i wanna play like them.

Graeme i learned the notes to your scale , love the 0 and 4 and 0 and 7 combination. how do you fitt it into compas ? can u please do a audio file for me cause id love to get this one right.

is solea right ? if you have any questions about any of the fingherings or compas of mine dont hesitate to ask cause i am fully excited about your idea :-) just incase you havent noticed the the 10 other posts i made about it lol.

Henrik must be away somewhere cause if he was here i am sure hed be right into this as well, hes got some cool runs.

Graeme -> RE: Scale runs? (Aug. 29 2005 23:15:39)

Hey Florian, just back and it seems I have some catching up to do! My scale I think came originally from a Juan Serrano book.....just a warm-up I think, not in particular compas. Will get back to you about your scale fingering when I've printed this thread out and had another play. Hasta pronto! Graeme

Ricardo -> RE: Scale runs? (Aug. 30 2005 3:59:52)

Zyryab:

E--2-5-2-0---------------------------
B------------2-5-2-0-----------------
G----------------------3-4-3-0-------
D---------------------------------4----
A--------------------------------------
E---------------------------------------

Looks easy, but Paco and his buddies do it at almost 200 bpm!!!![8D]

Ricardo

Graeme -> RE: Scale runs? (Aug. 31 2005 9:38:57)

Some interesting stuff here...thanks to all for those.

Hey Florian! Your first run: I'm puzzled by the rows of numbers above the first two lines of TAB. Can't be fingering unless you have FIVE FINGERS? And that would be just unfair....

Graeme

Florian -> RE: Scale runs? (Aug. 31 2005 12:35:40)

Graeme, i dont know what you talkin about :-) I see no mistakes up there.

Sorry i was trying to make it easyer but i think i only made it more confusing with the fingers.

I am playing in a farucca workshop for Belen Fernandez, I have transcribed the farucaa falseta from the Solo COmpas cd with the exception of a couple of the scales in it because i always have trouble transcribing fast scales, if anyone has some nice runs for farucca or wants to check over and correct the Solo COmpas farucca let me know. Il upload the files.

Grisha -> RE: Scale runs? (Dec. 30 2005 19:37:31)

Hello!

I have recently been working on Paganini's 17th Caprice. I noticed that using 3 fingers, or combination of 2 and 3, I could achieve great speed playing scale runs. Do you think it could work in flamenco?

sorin popovici -> RE: Scale runs? (Dec. 30 2005 19:56:53)

well
that zyriab example

since you have 4 notes amim amim amim

I use for warm up this

------3--4--1-2-------------
1-2---------------3--4----- Repeat till u want no more
-----------------------------
----------------------------
---------------------------
----------------------------

then
------3--4--1-2-------------
----------------------------
1-2--------------3-4-----------
----------------------------
---------------------------
----------------------------

Now expand this to 6th string ,bu ha ha ha

now , this is my exercise and I cant do it right....damn,damn,damn.

Grisha -> RE: Scale runs? (Dec. 30 2005 20:00:48)

No, I mean ami ami ami. For example, A-minor scale starting on the g (1st string 3rd fret) going down to open A on the 5th string would be: ami ami mi ami ami.

ToddK -> RE: Scale runs? (Dec. 30 2005 20:00:58)

3 finger picado certainly does work for flamenco.

My father used it, and it worked great. Mostly just for descending runs.
He could make it sound very even, without any hint of triplet feel, unless
he wanted that.

He mostly played for dancers, but he had a few solos, and he could
really rip some fast runs when he felt like it. :)

Grisha -> RE: Scale runs? (Dec. 30 2005 20:02:57)

WOW, Todd, that's great! It's in your blood!

sorin popovici -> RE: Scale runs? (Dec. 30 2005 20:03:09)

good one Grisha , thanks.

Grisha -> RE: Scale runs? (Dec. 30 2005 20:07:58)

Yeah, this way the first scale from the 7th study by Villa-Lobos (mi ami ami mi ami ami ami) can be played in about one second.

Grisha -> RE: Scale runs? (Dec. 30 2005 20:16:05)

In concerts I never play any 3 finger picado, except for Paco's Colombiana. But I practice it daily. No, I have no problem getting an even sound playing with 3 fingers, but sometimes string crossings can be a pain.

Grisha -> RE: Scale runs? (Dec. 30 2005 20:19:20)

Lionel, playing just chromatic scales will not provide you with enough variety to progress. As far as your tension goes, it's hard to answer because I never saw you play. But if it's a psychological problem, it can be solved by practicing 3-finger scales.
