estebanana -> What is the mythology behind the smart asses on the Foro ? (Jul. 19 2012 17:30:03)

Why are some people really serious and painfully earnest about flamenco, while others are non stop sarcastic commentators?

Which is more "flamenco" and why?

Is this a stupid question?

Which camp do you identify with and why?

Do you feel that a binary system of classification is appropriate for labeling a sarcastic flamenco or an earnest flamenco?

I need answers to these questions so that I may read then while I eat lunch in two hours.

Thank you for your contributions.

( any media such as video or sound clip to accompany your entry will be appreciated. )

[:D]

Are all republicans Christian?
Are all democrats p**ssies?

Now this is a funny post but very worthy of discussion IMO.

Me personally, I get accused of being too pesado which is totally not my personality. Somehow that's how I come off to some people.

I think the people that are painfully earnest are really trying to get better. Recent posts really began to demonstrate the potential of the foro but they died off (Kiko's video, Norman's historical journey through 100 yrs of falsetas, Flo's picado remates).

Binary system is too facile. There are some people that are sarcastically earnest and others that are painfully sarcastic.[;)]

(Can we get a larger library of emoticons so Todd will have some too)

Kaahpooyo to you too Ron.

Is that "posh" San Franciscan guitar maker speak for a "capo" by any chance?
I like accents and usages of words.

"Well, Sir....we have a fine, handmade kahpooyo right here..all hand made from prime Rosewood and a gift at only $99.99 if you love your Arte enough."

cheers,

Ron

Dialect is all about nuance Ronny. [:D]

Back to the topic guys...so why are some people here so darn serious about flamenco?

I suppose you'd be expecting a smartass answer from me , but no ....

I don't think its anything to do with flamenco specifically , just some people are serious and some are not , in all types of life.
As to flamenco , its recreational , its for enjoyment , it should be done in a fun way , you should play with a smile and have fun doing it , maybe it will sound better , maybe not but it will feel better.

People come for to this foro for enjoyment , sure there's a bit of study and some learning etc .. but it should be fun too and that's how I treat it.
I have serious things in my life I don't need more from a passtime on a computer.

Having said that , there are times to be serious and understanding on here as well .
Also I see things getting even tooo serious , especially these big disscussions about , eg .. the name or function of a chord ....i tend to switch off those things now , they wont help me play .

I think that you can explain many things that are useful in a lighthearted way or a serious way , one is more enjoyable , but both should carry the same information.....

The only thing about being funny or sarcastic , as you put it , is first you must be able to laugh about yourself ... this is important , this may help people identify with you ,
If you are just generally sarcastic about others , its the same as just having a go at people , this will get annoying real quick ...
However perhaps not so much if I start by ridiculing myself ,.......before I move on to Estebanana,..........

Which is more "flamenco" and why?

I suppose the lighter side of things is more flamenco , surely , the flamenco attitude is a bit devil may care kind of thing ...

ANd maybe Being fun is a trait people generally appreciate in others.
Don't be overly serious

First thoughts

ok lets talk about playing. So, do you also use your index finger for rasgeados, picados and arpeggios?

there you go estebanana ...i solved the problem of your thread, answered your question....i brought him into the light for you...theres the sarcastic guy [;)]

XXX -> RE: What is the mythology behind the smart asses on the Foro ? (Jul. 19 2012 22:35:37)

Of course. I have to stay on topic, right? [;)]

Well i dont have much to talk about flamenco wise. No new recordings or videos that i know of. Your remates were good i guess, but they dont shock me somehow. Remates have to shock you IMO. I find Jeronimo's playing very shocking to give an example. But lets get back to talking about playing: do you also use your thumb mainly to play single-note lines?

well they not my remates, they Pedro Sierra's and i was just showing you the notes if you wanted so u can learn it and shock yourself... ...because i felt like talking about some playing, i transcribed them for myself, am learning them and i thought someone might share the same interest and appreciate them ...i know if someone else did it before me i would have appreciated them

also included the originals ...does Pedro "shock" you ?

XXX -> RE: What is the mythology behind the smart asses on the Foro ? (Jul. 19 2012 22:49:35)

tsktsk, you took it personal. I just said they dont shock me, doesnt have to do anything with your or your playing. I think you played them just fine.

does Pedro "shock" you ?

he has a Buleria in D# where he accompanies La Tobala. I have listened to that song a lot, the whole track is a manifesto of kick-ass accompaniment IMO. Well Pedro is maybe one of my favorite accompanists anyway.

Kevin -> RE: What is the mythology behind the smart asses on the Foro ? (Jul. 19 2012 23:28:46)

For me, I always hoped the foro would fill the void created by moving from a place where people are very serious about flamenco to a new location where there is not very serious study.

It looked for a time when Jason was on here that it might shape up that way but there is another problem. Advanced musicians have spent thousands taking classes and buying CDs and guitars and after paying those dues they don't care to share with everyone for free. That's ok, I get it but it means advanced ideas don't get shared on here very often.

Here's my sarcastic or facetious side:
The foro is the inflatable doll of flamenco relationships. She will never make you feel like a real woman so what's the point?[8D]

(Insert Flo quote here)[;)]

"The foro is the inflatable doll of flamenco relationships.[:D][:D][:D]"

Well said! Typing slightly drunk, since I have just spent the night in the bar of the Jueves Flamenco de la Peña Mellizo, with Rancapino, Juan Villar, Ye Ye de Cádiz, Pascual de Lorca and our friend Estela.

Now I can´t play guitar well but it doesn't bother me. Flamenco is something else. I think it is just having fun with friends, wherever u are. I used to have a great time in Ireland with my flamenco and Spanish friends, when i didnt know any real flamencos. There I thought Pascual was a crack for his accompaniment on records of Mariano Cornejo. But he and I have just spent some time talking about soniquete, the difference between the blues from the Delta and from New Orleans, between the Bulerías de Cádiz, Jerez y Lebrija, and apart from being a crack he is a really nice person. And Ye Ye asking for David Serva, another crack and not even Spanish.

Not everyone can live in Andalucìa and be friends with flamencos who seem mythical from afar but are just ordinary people. Until then, you can support flamenco wherever u are, however u perceive it, and be assured u will always be welcome in Andalucía. We are all united by our afición and this is much appreciated by the flamencos.

Why makes u being sarcastic an ass?

marrow3 -> RE: What is the mythology behind the smart asses on the Foro ? (Jul. 20 2012 22:09:17)

sarcasm is used sometimes to prevent conversations, break down communication.

Ron.M -> RE: What is the mythology behind the smart asses on the Foro ? (Jul. 20 2012 22:20:56)

Not if you smoke.

Hemeola does not really come for the fart jokes, those go over his head.
