suniram -> where to get thick veneer for headstock (Jul. 8 2012 11:33:12)

Hi All,

could anybody tell me where I can get the thicker veneer for the top of the headstock, preferably here in Spain or at least in Europe? At Madinter they only seem to have a very poor selection of veneers in standard thickness,... and for the moment I havent found it at other shops either..

or can it maybe be done with several layers of the standard thin veneer?

many thanks

best regards
Marinus

Hey Marinus, Which Vaneer are you talking about?

are you talking about the head plate? you could try searching for that?

Another Idea is to use the off cuts from the back if your using rosewood. You could also buy a really really cheap back and sides and turn those into head plates. I recent bought some Madagascan RW sides that were useless for sides for head plates. I also bought a lump of indian that I got sawn into head plates.

I've got a slab of pink ivory (berchemia zeyheri) that I bought for mandolin bridges (maple base with pink ivory top) - I'm thinking of using some of this for head plates - seems really heavy, a bit like ebony - maybe it could be used as an alternative for bridges? Anyone any experience of this wood?

Marinus - I've bought rosewood head plates from Madinter in the past - I think I bought Ebony and Madagascar Rosewood.

Hey Stephen,

yes exactly, I need thick Rosewood Veneer for the Headplate, but for a Cypress guitar.

Great idea to just buy a cheap back and plane it down, I think, I will probably do that.

Many thanks !

Yes I'm on this track. I quite often use back remnants for the head stock so it keeps with the same wood. Why chuck when you can use. As others have said, thick - get a lump and have it sawn to the thickness required.[;)]

Hi Marinus, was just about to say palas at madinter when I see you found it out! They have madagasgar and indian. Nice. See you in May!

Hi Stephen,

yes, thanks..... see you in May. I am looking forward to it...

and by then I will have my first "in-bedroom-made-one" finished. Actually it is almost done now. Missing is only the fingerboard and the bridge. And the polish of course. Probably I will take it with me in May so you can have an experts look at it.

best regards
Marinus
