rombsix -> Saludos desde Nashville, TN! (Jun. 24 2012 22:17:51)

Hello y'all,

Rombsix is now based in Nashville. Isn't it great when I refer to myself in the third person? What is greater even is when I use my alias to do so. [8D]

I just arrived here two days ago, and I'm trying to settle down still. I just wanted to ask if anyone knows about any flamenco going on in Nashville, TN. I heard from some people here that the music school at Vanderbilt University occasionally holds flamenco dance classes. If I have some free time, I might try to accompany.

Any other tips?

I will be doing my psychiatry residency training at Vanderbilt University, by the way. In case anyone here is a Vandy person, please let me know.

PS: In case I don't participate on this thread again soon, it's because I still don't have internet at home and I am currently using the free wi-fi at a restaurant. I should have some form of internet connection about a week from now.

Hey romb - bursche is answering your post now saying that he wishes you best of luck in your new living place. He can imagine how this is an exciting experience for you and is looking forward to hear more about what you're doing at the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. bursche is greeting you with a saludo flamenco! Olé mi rombsix!

Any chance you'll end up in MN for a little while?

Andy Culpepper -> RE: Saludos desde Nashville, TN! (Jun. 24 2012 23:29:46)

Now you can put all those "y'all"s and "pardner"s to good use my Lebanese cowboy friend... (hold the "mate"s though).
Good luck man and enjoy your new surroundings, I'm sure we will meet some day in the future. In America we're lucky that people like you decide to come here.. it's really the only thing that makes our country "great".
Nashville really is a musical town but I know nothing about the flamenco scene there. i would guess there are a few people that are interested in it.

I am in Durham, NC and run the Triangle Guitar Society. We usually present two
flamenco shows per year. Grisha will be doing a show for us in September.
Ricardo has played twice for us.
Anyway, Nashville is quite far from here (about 10 hours by car) but you are welcome
here.
Best of luck to you.
Dennis

Congratulations on your residency!!
You'll have a very great experience.
Hard to imagine you wont find some wonderful musical connections there too...

Welcome to the music city Romb. I'm in Nashville as well. Tough to find a lot, if any, flamenco around here. I only know of a couple players. We have a great symphony hall which will occasionally get some spanish/ethnic music acts passing through. There's a lot of great music outside of flamenco going on though.

Ron.M -> RE: Saludos desde Nashville, TN! (Jun. 25 2012 5:24:30)

Hey Ramzi!!

Nashville is to C&W what Jerez is to Flamenco!

Can hardly wait to hear your "flamenco-ized" C&W covers! [:D]

(Your Cheatin' Heart por Rumba [;)])

cheers,

Ron

Holy ****! From Lebanon to Tennessee...that's quite the transition!!

I lived in Tennessee for four years. It's a really conservative state. But I hope you have a good time in Nashville. It's probably the best city in the state for music (though not necessarily a hotbed for flamenco).

Vanderbilt's a good school. I hope your residency there goes well. Good luck!

Congratulations on your residency and welcome to the USA.

Just note that you are in perhaps the only state in the USA where the politicians are as crazy as, or perhaps even crazier than those here in Texas.

I suspect Tennessee is like Texas in another way. The people here are friendly, honest and helpful. The craziness just comes out at election time.

I´m looking forward to the other version.. Cowboy flamenco. Yeehaa insted of olé. Those Rumbas, you just play slower (with a cowboy hat and one of those cool shirts) then its almost C&W and if you add a pedal steel guitar, a bass and a drummer and maybe a couple of sweet little country girls with hot pants and cowboy boots...... yeeehaaa.

keith -> RE: Saludos desde Nashville, TN! (Jun. 25 2012 12:05:18)

rombsix--lilly afshar, a classical guitarist of world fame, teaches in memphis. she is originally from iran.

so you are doing a residency in psychiatry--sweet. for the past 18 years i have worked as a director for residential and outreach programs serving individuals with a persistent and severe mental illness. sadly tennessee, along with way too many states, is not known for its cutting edge work with this population but it is good to know a flamenco psychiatrist is out there. i took a brief peek at the dsm v set to be published next spring and found that flamenco addiction still has not made it in--bummer as we could use that as our excuse for our addiction.

Cool man, but I thought you were medical student, not a shrink? I might need your help after all...and so will I.

I just met Lilly the classical guitarist mentioned, but in memphis. She was pretty crazy so that might be a double wammy for you. [;)][:D]

You should get a big black hat like Garth Brooks and wear it to clinic and talk in the third person all the time.

While in Gnashville see Tommy Emmanuel destroy a guitar.... at least once. And look into the history of country music. Tenneeeeesee was never a colony of Spain, not much flamenco.

Come to California for your post-post Doc and we will show you the flamenco in kitchens at 4 am.

I concur. Jaw-dropping player, I've seen him twice now. He even gives lessons once in a while to a lucky few locals when he's not touring. Very humble guy.

I agree. Tommy is to steel string guitar what Paco is to flamenco guitar. Just not from this planet...there's a lot of guitar players I admire, but nobody leaves me floored like Tommy does.

kudo -> RE: Saludos desde Nashville, TN! (Jun. 26 2012 0:41:37)

so you brought your guitar with you ramzi from lebanon? I thought you said you will never fly with your guitar...[&:]

estebanana -> RE: Saludos desde Nashville, TN! (Jun. 26 2012 1:29:23)

Yes he's very nice, Mr. Emmanuel, I chatted him up after a show. The thing he does with the guitar is quite brutal at times. He has this schtick in which he uses the top as a wash board (my best description) and rips it to shreds with a pick.

Now that you are in South Central US, get the lingo correct. Saying "pardner" and "hey cowboy" are for Texas and the states out West...duh. That is cattle country. ( California has more cattle ranches than almost any other state, 'cept Wisconsin. Oh haaay theeere, we're from Wisssconsin) A few cattle states like Nebraska have some cows too.

Kentucky-Tennessee talk would be more like "Listen here child, you just tell me what your problem is. Child! I said listen up child!" Watch Foghorn Leghorn cartoons for the accent.

I suggest you call your clinical supervisors "child" and "babe".

Don't gratuitously prescribe drugs, Americans are on enough drugs at present:

To your wards you should say, "Now look child you ain't got sense to come in out oh tha rain. Now go clean them horse stalls and get yourself more home trainin' and common sense by way of some honest work".

Also never insult a mans horse down there. And Highly recommended is a trip to outskirts of Lexington Kentucky where thay make bourbon. Even if you don't drink there is promise there, it smells delicious and the girls are "randy".

Are you stayin' up late child?

Stephen, you bring up a good point. There is a big difference between Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, etc. and the Western states. And that difference manifests itself in music as well. It has always seemed odd to me that "Country and Western" music is considered one genre. Although there are overlaps, "country" music belongs geographically to the above-named states and the South. This is the world of Hank Williams, Jimmie Rogers, Dolly Parton, George Jones, et al. It usually concerns miners, farmers, "crying in your beer" songs, etc.

"Western" music belongs geographically to the West: Arizona (my original home state), New Mexico, Colorado, Montana, Texas, etc. "Western" music generally is concerned with cowboys, gunfighters, "trail songs," etc. It also is far more likely to be sung in the form of a ballad. In my opinion, the greatest example of a Western singer was Marty Robbins. His signature song "El Paso" is the template for the Western ballad.

Cheers,

Bill

estebanana -> RE: Saludos desde Nashville, TN! (Jun. 26 2012 16:58:14)

Right on Bill. I'm no expert either, but historically there's a lot of regional flavor to hear on older records. The comparison to flamenco begins here.

Today C&W music is homogenized due to the fact that media makes it possible to hear what everyone every where is doing. Seventy to eighty years ago before C$W music was labeled there was a whole bunch of regional flavor to the music that eventually got classed as C&W.

Flamenco was the same way and to an extent still is, but the North hub location of Madrid as a melting pot of flamencos coming up from the South to perform gave flamencos a chance to hear other aires from places they formerly might not have gone during the lean years of the 30's, 40's and 50's.

Cowboy songs, trail songs are different from West Virginia songs...Western Swing, Disney versions of pioneer songs ..Whoa there..... Mix in Civil War era banjo and Minstrel music...there's a crazy amount of music to take into account.

Here is the analogy between flamenco and country music: Gnashville and Madrid served the same purpose, they both became locations or destinations that one had to go through in order to get recognition and work. During the process of those places becoming hubs of activity the music of many separate regions united and blended.

That is how recordings of Marote with Fernanda came about, and also why the Bakersfield Country Western sound was so different from music coming out of Nashville. Bakersfield and Jerez are the same thing in that respect, a far out province with heavy local groove that could not be cooked down.

Throw Hollywood and Disney into the mix and the subject of slick production and glamour enter. The editing out of heavy regional difference to make product that fits mainstream tastes. Disney worked harder at keeping that together Hollywood totally ran amuk.

And then there's Motown, which is a whole other similar story.

Welcome to Nashville Rombi ! I suspect if you want little flamenco with in a few state radius you might find it in Cincinnati, also a wonderful music city.

Richard Jernigan -> RE: Saludos desde Nashville, TN! (Jun. 26 2012 18:04:02)

The Mexican and Mexican American music of South Texas has largely resisted homogenization: polka, ranchera, cumbia, norteña..

Chicago played the same role for the blues as Madrid did for flamenco.

Yep because of the dominant language being English. San Antonio would be the Nashville of Mexican music in the US.

So I was thinking Romz might find these things interesting as a musical context to explore Nashville.

When I stop to think about it is staggering how much music the US harbors from all over the world. I wonder how much goes back to where it came from and changes again; Ida e Vuelta.

Talking like what was described above will get you tossed out of town, tossed out of the residency program or laughed out of town--or all of the above.
