Most singers will be able to play at least a little guitar to be able to accompany themselves. Others like Fernando Terremoto hijo were accomplished guitarists before changing to cante.

Add palmas and baile to the mix and you start to understand
flamenco is a way of life more than just a music genre.
This gets to the heart of what I mean when I say flamenco
guitar students need to understand it has it's own unique
discipline for learning and one should not confuse that with
other styles of guitar. After that is accepted learning faster is
easier and more complete at the same time.... and also we no
no longer are so impressed with young prodigies and multi talented
artists in the genre ... It's all quite normal in the flamenco environment

What exactly is it that you think flamenco guitar students need to understand? Compas? The role of compas in underwriting the dynamic interactions between singer, dancer, and guitarist? Something else? Just curious.

Compas is the main thing, after which the doors of learning open and it all gets easier. But also I mean to not focus so much on fingerboard theory as other guitar styles do, rather pick it up along the way as compas drives you to learn authentic material. So know not only how to play C F and G chords but rather, how EXACTLY flamenco accompanists finger them and why (cante accompaniments) and don't waste time trying to relate and compare so much to other guitar styles. Even notation or tabs, counting beats etc can be a waste of time once you are already learning "the flamenco way".
