Florian -> IF you havent allready u need to try Spotify (Jun. 18 2012 18:49:18)

I know this sounds like an ad lol but its not, i been telling everyone i know to get it

you will love it, so much flamenco...someone told to get this last year but i ignored her... i tried it last week and its brilliant, i am hooked

its like an endless supply of all the music and for your computer is free, cd quality (through facebook), just been listening to Juan Carlos Romero new album on it

Or there is a premium plan, u can get it on your Android or Iphone $11 a month...it really is brilliant...never ever run out of music in the car again...its cd quality...and u can also synk any tracks on your phone so you don't need to be connected to the net

think about it...every solo compas cd and thousands of flamenco albums in your phone...when you rehearsing or need to work out a letra or remember something and u not home

https://www.spotify.com/au/about/what/

XXX -> RE: IF you havent allready u need to try Spotify (Jun. 18 2012 18:58:13)

everyone and everything almost...theres a great flamenco selection....biggest flamenco selection than everywhere else I think

just listened to Romeros new album there...its a pretty good indication, all the big ones Paco, Vicente, Tomatito, Camaron, Nino De Pura, Chicuelo, Ramon Jimenez, Jesus de Rosario a lot of flamenco.... but not just the big ones and not just guitarists a lot of cante, all the solo compas cds, ritmo flamenco etc..modern and traditional, its a great selection.

its a great way to listen to the entire a new chicuelo or Miguel Poveda album at cd quality as soon as it comes out..

as i said for computer its free, so u can check it out if you want...see if they have the guys you like

its like a flamenco encyclopedia...you type in any palo and theres a lot of different versions of it by a lot of different artists

also aside from flamenco endless supply of every pop song, and the latest stuff etc...and other genres, i had alot of fun playing with it on my girlfriends iphone in the car (first 24 hours are free for your phone, and then if you wanna sign your credit card first month is free)...she was driving and i was finding the cheesiest 80 songs [:D]

not to complain...but there's a reason Im not into this "free" music listening stuff. Fine if it's samples but when folks can get all your stuff so cheap I don't think its so cool. Royalities are great but if your not a pop artist it ain't much to look at. I share with everybody my personal info come direct from CD baby. They pay my royalties from spotify etc along with actual hard copies sold or digital downoads of my songs. I never DIRECTLY gave permission for ANY of this liscensing out...Im sure there is fine print somewhere nothing I can do now. I would prefer only samples and folks have to buy full albums as in the old days. But just so you know hard numbers I show only the stuff from spotify etc:

quote:

$0.24 for DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION SALES through Spotify
$0.03 for DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION SALES through Napster
$0.03 for DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION SALES through Spotify
$0.03 for DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION SALES through Rhapsody
$0.01 for DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION SALES through Rhapsody - Mechanical Royalties
$0.01 for DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION SALES through Rhapsody - Mechanical Royalties
$0.01 for DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION SALES through Rhapsody - Mechanical Royalties
$0.01 for DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION SALES through Rhapsody - Mechanical Royalties
$0.01 for DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION SALES through Spotify
$0.01 for DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION SALES through Spotify
$0.01 for DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION SALES through Rhapsody

This includes my only two available CD's I have out there I ve been trying to sell. Compared to what I sell at gigs of hard copies during the week, these numbers are funny to me. The period is after maybe 6 months or something, not sure...but really all my heart and soul out in the internet world is worth...40 cents? [:D][&:]

A member informed me by PM he refused to pay for my music but heard it on spotify and liked it. GEE THANKS FOR THE PENNIES.[:@]

XXX -> RE: IF you havent allready u need to try Spotify (Jun. 18 2012 21:03:43)

Do you get any info on how often your songs are getting played on spotify? Dont know how much the rates are on the internet, but i know that in Germany when you play a song (just once) in a bar or something 0.24 could be a valid figure for the roaylities actually.

i don't know buddy :-) i don't know what you have...i for one didn't have juan carlos romero new album...i am sure theres a lot more stuff but i haven't checked

Ricardo.. i understand man it sucks for some artists ...do you mean your albums are on spotify and you never actually gave permission ? that's weird that cd baby can do stuff like that ..

so what is it 1 cent every time someone plays your track ?

well hopefully some good will come of it and get your name out there more...there are also some pluses to this...whilst someone might not necessarily find a web where you are selling your album, or might not have the patience to wait 3 weeks for it to arrive, or might make a new fan simply cause he gets directed or introduced to your music from someone similar, and than is so convenient to listen to you...not pay...then wait 3 weeks......hopefully they are customers you didn't have before ...or wouldn't have gotten....like the member who pmed you...

spotify is quite young and probably still developing, good or bad i think is the way of the future, the convenience factor for the listener and the unlimited selection is huge ....the internet is and was already killing the recording industry...while the money is little atm, especially for the non commercial guy not doing pop who dosent have million dollar advertising ...it is at least a baby step in the right direction i hope, some people are getting money they wouldn't have before.....when its so easy and cheap to get noone bothers with illegal copies or virus infested torrent places....

especially when u can be in the car with your iphone...on a long drive ...and think "i feel like listening to the Beatles"...instantly...any song any album anything u feel like...right there on your car stereo

quote:

that's terrible...i cant believe its so low...as i said i hope its 40 cents you wouldn't have had before...

If you really believe it affects your physical sales and are losing money cause of it, i am sure theres a way to chase it up and remove it from there..

hopefully they will work out a way to be fair to the artist because i think dvd and cd stores will become obsolete soon...why get dressed, get in the car...rush before the store closes...hope they have a copy of the new release movie you wanna see...

when u can get it any time of the day or night instantly with a press of a button...and have an unlimited selection...and the movie you wanna see its always in...and u don't need to get in the car and return it after

Spotify say .............

quote:

Is your music on Spotify even though you haven’t sent it to us?

All the music on Spotify has been licensed from and delivered by labels or other rights holders. Usually when an artist asks us how their music ended up on Spotify, it turns out that the artist’s music has been licensed and delivered by a label or aggregator without the artist knowing about this. If you are positive that nobody else could have licensed your music to Spotify, then please contact us here.

So if your music is there and you think it shouldnt be...........

Guys....CD baby didn't do it. It was more likely Amazon etc or Itunes. I have NO CLUE. I can say when you upload your music they give you boxes to check....it all seems pretty harmless. Untill the next day you learn that the ONE box you checked was a company whose policy is to liscense your **** to ANYBODY....and its too late. That's how they get you. I learned my lesson....obviously. I say screw em...and if you think that its so cool to have anything you want fast and cheap at touch of a button....then you have no right to sit back and complain about economy problems of the world and such. I dont deny it's all headed down the same road....we've talked so much in the past about it. Double edged sword the ease of internet is.

Luckily there are still some folks that actually like to have things in their hands such as an actual hard copy of a music CD or Movie DVD, but one day it will all be free and guess what? No body is gonna be CAPABALE of making music of quality for 1 cent I can tell you that. Enjoy it while it lasts guys.

I have a lot of respect for your abilities and you even seem like a half-decent person, but I have to disagree. I think that the whole notion of 'professional artist' is pretty bogus. In my opinion (for what it's worth), everyone should be making art (not only consuming it as some from of entertainment) as a part of their day to day. Sure, you might not have as much time to work on your picado because you need to spend some time making money, but I don't think the quality of the music will suffer. Check out at Charles Ives - an insurance salesman that filled his whole basement with amazing compositions that were only discovered after his death.

I for one love the easy access the internet provides. I don't need to clutter my life with cds and such, much simpler to have all my music in one place. Streaming makes it even better coz I don't need to worry about hard drive space. I don't mean to put anyone out, just using what's available to me. You need to adapt to survive.

Plus I never complained about the global economy. I graduated with a music degree that I could pretty much wipe my ass with, and after realizing I don't want to play crappy gigs for ****ty club and restaurant owners I looked for another way to make money. I busted my ass and taught myself a 'marketable skill' and now I'm my own boss, work wherever and whenever I want, and make better money than my professors did. The world keeps changing and you need to change with it, or else you get left behind. It's not a sign of the times, it's always been like that.

I'm sorry that you're only making 1 cent per listen, but you're part of an industry with a broken business model. Sorry for being blunt but there's no way around it. Anyway, I already offered to buy you three drinks in return for your 'free' music (I pay the subscription fee). How's about I'll up it to four? =P

Oh please...stop with the accolades you flatter me. I don't know what to say...(sarcastically blushing and fanning myself). [8|]

Actually I do know what to say (regarding most of your comments above) but I keep it to myself for now. I leave it with this comment from John Mclaughlin I read as a teen that really stuck with me, even though at the time I was just a kid with very low level and nothing but hopes and dreams as I started learning guitar. He said: "...to be a musician is a great privilege AND a great responsibility. I want to be worthy of that. The only way I can be worthy of that is to devote myself to it and be dedicated to it. That's how you do it justice because music can't exist without musicians."

I understood exactly what he meant at the time and it was pretty awesome statement, I pretty much live by it. It turns out, he was right...saddly for some that should have made it more than a hobby, they suffer, others as well make themselves out to be more than they are also suffer. Success will result once the musician realizes the importance and role he or she plays in the bigger picture. Money alone is NOT success.

Ricardo

chester -> RE: IF you havent allready u need to try Spotify (Jun. 19 2012 4:22:51)

Lol. I wasn't trying to flatter you, just lessen the blow.

You can keep the implied hostilities to yourself, it's not making your case any stronger.

I don't understand how McLaughlin's statement contradicts anything I said. I guess it all boils down to how you define a musician. Is a musician someone who makes his living solely out of performing music? Or is it someone who simply plays music?

Personally, I don't define myself as only one thing. I am many things, musician being one of them. I still play and perform music and don't intend to stop, I just didn't want to rely on it for income. Seeing your posts above only reassures me I made the right decision.

I'm not saying "don't be a professional musician", we are all different and have different priorities. But if you choose to play music for a living, complaining that you're being screwed by the system (that you chose to enter) and trying to blame the internet (or djs, or disco music) only makes you look like a bitter musician who ultimately just plays because he has to rather than want to. That's a responsibility, I doubt it's a privilege.

Really? Hmmm.... sort of a contradiction no? It's ok man, I understand you. And makes perfect sense why you define yourself as more than one thing. You are torn and it's obvious. I'm a "musician" cuz that's all I devoted to. You seem to think "income" is important and not acheivable for a musician/artist. Bankers/lawyers/doctors don't have this problem. It's a common mistake. Its easy for me to say I am a "musician" but you can't really tell us how you make money other than "you are your own boss" despite your music degree....says a lot.

I only pointed out the trap of this spotify **** leeching off artists (using myself as an example) thanks to checking boxes and behind your back liscensing out and paying pennies to you to make it all legal. If you can admit what it is you do for a "living" I am sure we can imagine there is someone out there in the world that can screw you too. (It's ok, what ever it is you don't have to tell us, I'm just making a point).

About me being screwed by the "system" and being bitter, forced to work cuz I must NOT cuz I want to....Oh **** man you don't know me at all!!
[:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]

It's actually ok man, in the end the royalties added up from digital sales overall (the invisible to me transfer of data that means my music to someone out there in cyberspace) to like $64 total this "period" whatever it is. It feels like two free fat tanks of gas for my car to go driving around and enjoy my jobless funliving musician existence...and I promise to spend that gas driving to some nice parties where I will perform for FREE cuz I want to, and enjoy free booze and food or whatever else in exchange for simply doing what I LOVE MOST, and have those drinks and merriment as celebration in the name of my cyber fans such as you amigo.[;)]

chester -> RE: IF you havent allready u need to try Spotify (Jun. 19 2012 8:25:30)

Ha. I'm glad I was able to contribute to those parties. I'm expecting a lot of good karma to come from the DC area. [:D]

I can see your point about being screwed on account of a checkbox, but isn't it a little similar to you playing at parties for free? Maybe at the party you get free food, drinks, and laughs, but imagine some young guitarist in some country you've never thought about (let's say Estonia - my apologies to any Estonian members) sitting in his room, streaming 'Madera Sonora', listening to the same lick over and over trying to figure it out. Plus you get a penny for each click.

Too romanticized? I'd like to believe that's what the internet allows for.

What I meant by the concept of a professional artist being bogus is more about the culture that promotes consumption instead of participation. We don't all partake in art, we pay someone to make it for us to experience it passively (by we I mean society, not us personally). The whole notion of art as a job devalues (in some sense) the art itself. Suddenly you're not doing it because you love it the most, you do it because it's "what you do" and you feel entitled to compensation. Your last post said that you're doing it because you love it (and I believe you), but your previous posts suggested that you're upset because you're not getting what you "deserve". I was trying to make a point that no one "deserves" anything, life's a hustle.

As far as what I'm doing for work - I'm a freelance web-developer. Nothing secretive. I can talk about it all night long, just wanted to spare you guys. [:D]

It's all very sneaky isn't it. It's like when i first joined you tube. I just put in my email address and i was away. Then when google took over they started asking me to create a google account, which i didn't have. Anyway i just ignored it. Then one day i tried to log on. It was suddenly compulsory to have a google account or i couldn't log in.[8|]

Now when i try and log in it says they want my mobile phone number so they can send me a txt if someone hacks my account. For "security reasons". I am ignoring it but i know one day soon the skip this step option will be removed, just like it was with the create google account one. [:@]

The real winners in all this are the internet service providers.

I do sympathize with you and see your frustration about the energy u put into your album and how seeing a cheque like that must make you feel...and I do think you deserve your rewards for your music and your craft...i am sure and hope that you will get it...

hopefully they will find a way to not kill those industries and make it rewarding for the artist and keep those industries alive ( i don't know...perhaps something to do with ISP's they making a fortune from the internet and the biggest reason people get the net is to access...music, movies, games , software...seems like ISP's are ripping the biggest rewards when the attraction is something that has nothing to do with them, seems to me like it would be fair for them to share some of the spoils or pay some royalties towards the content which attracts people to use their product in the first place, imagine internet sales if there were no more even illegal music, movies, software, games on the net...)...do you think they don't know what goes on and way people want more and more download data and why they are giving it to them ? they conveniently look the other way cause they know that to do the right thing means money out of their own pockets...

all people are good by nature, and noone wants to purposely rip anyone off...but when u just paid $100 a month for the net and got 500 gigs of downloads for those reasons...you don't exactly feel like you ARE getting it for free.....and don't tell me that we are getting unlimited download plans and paying 60 bucks extra for them the read the forum or email or just to read Wikipedia......at one point or another we have all downloaded something for which someone is getting screwed, watching a copywrited YouTube clip, downloading a book, an album, a tab, a movie a documentary, a picture..a software

When one person is doing it is illegal when everybody is doing it , its change...and they need to figure out a way to change too and accept reality and make it work....or just declare that everyone is bad

when cars were invented and it presented, comfort, shorter travel time and practicality noone pretended it didn't happen and stuck with the horses and carriages..

the answer is not to try and fight it but find a way to make it work for you...the internet has some negatives for music until they figure out a way.. but it also has some many positives for musicians one of them being that if you wanted you can get word out to about 100000000 people at a press of a button about your album or gig for free...something you couldn't have dreamed about before the internet...something that only big companies with big famous artists could afford

That's why I said double edged sword...more exposure, but you are forced to cheapen it all. Is it a perfect balance? Going from $20 per unit to $0.01 per listen doesn't feel like a perfect balanced situation. Sure you get free advertising, but WHAT is being advertised? The guy in Estonia gonna higher me to play at his wedding? LOL. And he don't need to buy my CD if he already can hear it when ever he wants....WHAT am I advertising? MAYBE lessons...but all musicians need not be teachers...or will they in the future?

Like I said I can understand SAMPLES that generate royalites....so you listen to your radio and you hear maybe half the tune....if you want it buy it to hear the WHOLE thing GREAT...if not, thanks for the penny either way. Even the $0.99 per song download makes no sense to me. For a standard length pop tune fine 3-4 minutes, but lets say a Shakti piece of 18 minutes of lydian 9/4 bliss is also $0.99 only because it's a single track? And the whole disc being only 3 tracks long is only $3 but at discount you get for $2.50???? It's crazy. [EDIT. This specific example I had seen in past I just re check and notice they meaning Amazon and Itunes, removed single download options for long tracks. "Album only " replaces the mp3 download icon...so this issue has finally been addressed. GOOD!!! LOL]

I like CD baby cuz they give the artist control over all aspects. I can charge $5 per track if I wanted to. But the problem is the mentality of internet minded is already "How dare YOU..nobody wants your stuff for more than a dollar"...and now they can "spotify" it for a penny. Eventually it will be "how dare you charge AT ALL for your music...". It won't be worth to spend electricity to even upload it. Hence "going along with the system" musicans must come to terms with fact that 'professional" is bogus term for a musician...LOL.

DJ was mentioned also earlier. They been cutting in on musicians for years already. Cuz they play ANYTHING. I saw a DJ with lap top and sign "Im the DJ NOT a juke box!!!" [:D] I thought that was funny cuz nowadays anybody can push a button on a play list and sit back and have a drink. In fact, sad to say, I have had to do the same and tell clients "**** your dj, when we take a break we play the Ipod on request[;)]". A nice little revenge, but it only works in venues that actually can afford live music to begin with. I still can't believe clubs still higher DJs when even the dish washer can play and Ipod. Live music is irreplaceable, luckily, but it would still be a shame that musicians don't want to make recordings anymore since there would be ZERO return on it.

our technology has developed way faster then our plan or strategy on how to prevent this hurting movies or music industries and it kind of took us all by surprise before we could figure out what to do with it and how to stop it doing that...

there must be a way...need to change our strategy of using the internet, paying for music..getting convenience and enjoying and benefiting from new technology but not at the cost of losing the industries...we are all still paying for stuff only its going into the pockets of those who aren't sharing any with those whos content attract us to using those technologies.

like i said i believe in addition to places like Spotify ...is not unreasonable that Internet Providers should pay some sort of royalties to the owners whos content is being used and downloaded by their clients..and they would know this best because they have access to the details of everyone's content...maybe a different way to charge...the only way to monitor it, stop it or fix it is at the root.

they been getting the whole chunk of the money for a long time now for providing merely a vehicle to getting to the main attraction...if those industries die they need to take responsibility for their part in it...weather willingly or unwillingly...they are aware why most clients want unlimited downloads, they advertise it... and they give it to them, and they conveniently look the other way..

If the content is no longer available on the net...3 quarters or their clients will stop paying for the internet....so it is just as much their responsibility or in their interest to start taking responsibility and share some of the spoils and help support those industries which suffer as a direct result of their technologies ..

they need to stop looking the other way and pretend that they aren't aware of the role they have played in it

i don't know if that is an answer or the best plan...but in any case different strategies are now required to compensate for changes in technology and its impact on certain affected industries...and those who have profited most need to now accept and work towards a solution..

capitalism...and everyone just watching their own arse and as long as they not affected and they ripping in the rewards...dosent exactly work best for the arts in this situation...a little bit of communism would be nice for the suffering industries, a little bit of shared responsibility and the share of spoils and working together to ensure the existence and survival of those industries their product affected in a negative way would be good.

IMO

Munin -> RE: IF you havent allready u need to try Spotify (Jun. 19 2012 16:25:51)

The breadth of flamenco available on Spotify is mind-boggling but overall I see it as a good thing, a great way to discover new artists and albums that I can still buy at a later stage if I really like them. So I consider Spotify a "try before you buy" sort of thing, however this time unlike Napster and all the P2P stuff it's actually legal (even though it may not be fair).

It should also be noted that you can find ALL Solo Compas CDs on there and Ritmo Flamenco...a huge help since I was screwed over by Dr Compas.

Point is you didn't even HAVE to buy it if you listen to iphone or other little thing more versitle than your mp3 player and you WILL eventually be forced to give up on your mp3 player I promise. And on spotify page it says "share with flick of the wrist, send direct to friends facebook etc...the way music is SUPPOSED to be heard..."

So now that's how music is supposed to be heard, by "free" sharing. Again I get a royalty of a penny I am not allowed to complain really, so I will shut up now and join the sheep.

Man i like Spotify ....i do think its wrong for them to have your stuff there if you aren't happy about that and without your permission..i am totally with you on that...i think only artists who wanna be on there should be on there...everyone should have the right to decide how and where his album should be available

you should write to them or cd baby and explain that you aren't happy with your music being there and that u want control over its cost and distribution and see what they say..

i know u think u must have clicked something to give them permission but maybe you didn't...maybe theres a way to remove it on request since it is your property...even with cd baby, i doubt agreeing for them to sell your cd is not binding for a lifetime...i am sure that when u decide you no longer wish to sell a particular album its up to you...unless someone else paid you in bulk for the rights

maybe i am wrong but you should perhaps look into it...surely as the artist and copy-write holder you have the final say...theres plenty of other places where you can sell it online using only a sample of your tracks

It seems CDbaby assume that artists want as much exposure as possible, the spotify/cdbaby deal is outlined here:

http://members.cdbaby.com/get-on-spotify.aspx

unless you have a contract that can't be undone or modified, surely you can email them

In the past I never looked at CD baby, but now I will try it next time. To be honest as far as I know both itunes and amazon avoid tax in the UK so not that keen to rely upon them, but wasn't sure what to do about it. Seems CD baby is at least a better deal for musicians.

...off to chew the cud...

that I can still buy at a later stage if I really like them.

Understood, but what exactly makes you want to buy it if you can listen to it anytime you want anyway???

Well...I want to support the artist? Does that seem that absurd to you these days? [:D]

Kudo: I can't use it anymore because I have a new phone and it doesn't register that I already purchased it before...tried contacting Maissam / the support several times to no avail...get no response.
