It looks amazing. It's a great plantilla and you captured all the nice design elements of a blanca. Ole!

El Polaco -> RE: Jorge's First Build (Jul. 11 2012 15:19:55)

Sorry for the silly serious faces and bad playing ... I was trying to concentrate on the sound of the guitar. the Ipad doesnt record sound very well..
Anyway... A few more guitar detail photos attached. (temporary golpeador til I finish the FP).

It looks superb! Amazing for a first guitar.

paul.troutfisher -> RE: Jorge's First Build (Jul. 11 2012 15:37:44)

Fantastic Jorge - congrats. Amazing job - really.

Ok, let's hear it now!

El Polaco -> RE: Jorge's First Build (Jul. 11 2012 15:43:35)

The video is here I guess...

Wasn't sure how to post it inline...

El Polaco -> RE: Jorge's First Build (Jul. 11 2012 15:57:14)

Thanks so much gentlemen for all the help, encouragement and amazing advice.
I wouldn't have started this venture without you all around... Truly!!!

Seems like it is playable so I will take it apart again now, finish the FP, install the pegs properly and the golpeador and start taking it out...

BTW is superglue the best way to secure the Planetary pegs. They seem so tight as they are now installed temporarily. I fear the glue will grip before they are threaded all the way in...?

Doitsujin -> RE: Jorge's First Build (Jul. 11 2012 16:14:32)

Very nice! And silly faces belong to music.

constructordeguitarras -> RE: Jorge's First Build (Jul. 11 2012 16:20:01)

Sounds great and your playing is too. It is obviously very playable--looks like you got the action just the way you wanted. You should be very proud. Are you happy? Going to build full time now?

El Polaco -> RE: Jorge's First Build (Jul. 11 2012 16:23:53)

Thanks Ethan!

Well, I already have the wood for the second - a negra and I have an order already! is $2500 a reasonable price to ask for a beginner?

constructordeguitarras -> RE: Jorge's First Build (Jul. 11 2012 16:43:02)

Chuck Herrin who makes the things says that CA glue is best. I use brush on Krazy glue for convenience. I have never had a problem with one gripping before it is screwed all the way in--and once the glue container is open, it cures slower and slower over time. I do get them in as fast as reasonably possible though. I have had to reglue several because they didn't get glued in strongly enough.

$2500 sounds reasonable for a beginner yet maker of such a high-quality guitar.

Best wishes,

paul.troutfisher -> RE: Jorge's First Build (Jul. 11 2012 16:58:22)

Ole!

El Polaco -> RE: Jorge's First Build (Jul. 11 2012 17:05:42)

You are too kind Ethan! To answer your previous question - yes I'm happy. :)

Am I Being too cheap with the price do you think?

What distance do you typically set the peg string hole from the head surface? I ran out of reamer so I may not be quite deep enough...

constructordeguitarras -> RE: Jorge's First Build (Jul. 11 2012 20:28:15)

Pricing is something that I have had trouble with but I think you picked a good starting point.

I install the pegs so almost all of the smaller-diameter part on the end sticks out. I use a small reamer and then a large one to do this, but it is also possible with a small reamer and a stepped hole, I think.

Gimar -> RE: Jorge's First Build (Jul. 12 2012 6:57:49)

man that looks realy impressive!!

wish I had the peace of mind to spend more time building [:(]

kominak -> RE: Jorge's First Build (Jul. 12 2012 9:07:11)

Amazing! And this is your first build... I wish my 1st turned out so pro-looking.
Great couple of weeks are waiting for you - I wouldn't believe how much the sound of the guitar can change during those first weeks - the basses got more solid, trebles improved, overall the guitar got a little stiffer.

Congrats on great looking and sounding guitar!

El Polaco -> RE: Jorge's First Build (Jul. 12 2012 13:07:45)

Thank you very much for the compliments! I am flattered that you think my first build is of an acceptable construction standard.

Now I have to just focus on learning how to understand what key factors change the tone and voice of the guitar.
I feel i should experiment with the following:

Top thickness adjustments
Brace thickness and positioning
Choice of top wood

I am starting a negra while I finish the FP on my #1. I got engleman spruce. Should I try a European top or should I make adjustments to the engleman which is what I used for my Blanca.

I understand only minor adjustments are all that should be done but I still don't know how my Blanca is going to settle until I restring her and break her in a little (so to speak).

Ethan,
Thanks for the peg tips, I didn't think about making a stepped hole to avoid the open ring around the tip when it is installed... Sounds tricky tho ...
Maybe Chuck could make special stepped reamers specifically for the job...

Well, it's off to the workshop... :)

Later.

orsonw -> RE: Jorge's First Build (Jul. 12 2012 15:25:28)

Looks very beautiful!

I really like the aesthetic choices you made- headstock, heel cap, tieblock rosette, plantilla. I'm not a luthier so I can't comment on woodworking but it looks very, very impressive to my eyes for a first guitar.

I am amazed anyone can make a guitar- I know I couldn't but I've really enjoyed following your progress. Thanks for posting! (Enjoyed your playing too.)

PS Are all those guitars for sale on your other 'guitar player' website your personal collection!?

El Polaco -> RE: Jorge's First Build (Jul. 12 2012 16:26:51)

Hey, thanks so much Orson! Glad you like the details of the guitar. I may just keep them as standard with a little change for a negra like head veneer laminatins and back purfling, machines etc...

Yes all the guitars are available for sale - especially now that I have put so much money into ramping up this workshop! :)

Just contact me if you want any more info on my guitars for sale or even a new one by yours truly! Lol

Thanks again!

Jeff Highland -> RE: Jorge's First Build (Jul. 12 2012 21:31:51)

Beautiful work Jorge!!!

El Polaco -> RE: Jorge's First Build (Jul. 12 2012 22:44:18)

Thanks Jeff! I really appreciate it! :)

I started the negra today while I do a few more FP sessions on the blanca.

Shawn Brock -> RE: Jorge's First Build (Jul. 12 2012 23:50:58)

George, great job buddy! It still saddens me that we never met when I lived in Cincinnati. Just noticed you have a guitar maker site now. LOL That's a sign of commitment! Oh man, looks like we didn't live to far apart! I lived in Bridgetown and Western Hills mostly, and Downtown for a while. I'll be hollering at you when I get back up that way.

Congratulations on the guitar! Hell, it makes me proud. BTW, how come you didn't go with the 8MM Pegheds? I see you wrote that those were 9MM? From your description I was thinking we had the same reamer from LMI, (violin one for $40 something). The reason I brought it up was that I haven't had any trouble running out of reamer when installing the 8MM Pegheds.

El Polaco -> RE: Jorge's First Build (Jul. 24 2012 0:05:43)

Closed my negra today!
Boy was it easier the second time! 11 day so far.
I have spent a lot of time in the workshop tho but I didn't have too keep opening all my books and worrying at each step of the way.
Much more relaxing and fun. I have a buyer too so I can buy more wood and keep going.

I was planning to try a cutaway with a fishman system then Andy posted his.

Andy,
The guitar looks and sounds great!
What top did you use?
Is that the pro blend system or matrix. I like the internal mic blended with a tiny bit of Pizo

Andy Culpepper -> RE: Jorge's First Build (Jul. 24 2012 21:13:36)

Thanks Jorge. The negra is shaping up nicely.
I used the pro blend and I think it's an amazing system. The range of tones you can get out of it is huge and it sounds very even. I normally hate the sound of pickups but my favorite setting on that one was actually mostly pickup with just a tiny bit of mic.
