I wonder if anybody remembers Miguel Rodriguez who was playing in Houston, Texas back in the 1980's when this smokin' hot bulerias was played.

He was completely self taught, and, if I remember correctly, he learned from a record player as a child, and developed a technique that would enable him to play on the stage with Pepe Romero and hold his own. I wish he had gone on to international fame - he certainly had more than enough talent.

Just saw this, Miguel is a friend of mine. In fact, I just talked to him yesterday.

He lives in Arizona and gigs and does his own thing. More into Baden Powell and other Brazilian sounds nowadays. However, when he picked up my new Shelton Farretta a few weeks ago, he started ripping out some Sabicas and got into it. :)

Miguel is certainly a virtuoso, IMO.

I note you live in Phoenix. I grew up in Phoenix but moved away when I entered the U.S. Foreign (Diplomatic) Service. I still visit Phoenix, and I wonder if you know a flamenco guitarist who goes by the name "Gaetano"? A couple of years ago, I saw Gaetano play at the Hyatt Regency at Gainey Ranch in Scottsdale. He also has recorded some of the guitars for James Greenberg's website "Zavaleta's la Casa de las Guitarras." I met Gaetano at a dinner tribute for Lydia Torea (I knew her vaguely long ago in high school as Lydia Dzambik). She made her career as a flamenco dancer, starting out with Jose Greco.

Just wonder if you have come across and know Gaetano or Lydia Torea?

Yes, I know them. Lydia has been a major presence here in Phoenix for many years, but she is finally retired even from teaching. She is a truly colorful character and I have always enjoyed spending time with her. The few times I played flamenco on stage were for her dance student recitals. The last time I saw her was at Paco's concert in May. He stopped the show and pointed her out to the audience and had her stand up and be recognized. That had to have felt good.

The Gainey Ranch gig ended this year after over a decade, unfortunately. It was a great place to see some fun music and hear the local dancers. Gaetano is, however, the type to land on his feet.

So you are from Arizona? That explains your politics, ha ha :)

Not really. Arizona politics don't attract me. My support for capitalism, and the free enterprise system upon which it is based, developed over a long period of study of various economic systems , plus personal experience of living and working in countries operating under various economic systems. I saw the results.
