ibanezx123 -> Picado- Any tips for not making this bad habbit (May 29 2012 21:10:02)

Ok so i've watched many videos on picado technique(also have been practicing about 4-6 hours a day on this one technique), and they all say the same things, Economy of motion, precision, press string down first before releasing ect. ect. So i've been practicing a lot and got it blazing fast....and then one day i realized that my M finger was hitting the string on an up stroke...making it sound ungodly fast...but of course this is the wrong technique. I found that i was mostly doing it when i was trying to minimize my movement, and so i'd have my fingers so close to the strings that ....this would happen(M finger doing up stroke). Does anyone have any tips in solving this? Anyone else have this problem? or know a way to help not do this? I have practiced slow as well but it doesn't seem to help because when i play fast i just go back to the old way.

Prractice on open strings w right hand alternate I-m strokes, not slow
but fast speed bursts only. 3 and 4 note groups only.... Later
5 and 6 note bursts. Alternate controlled bursts with medium tempo
staccato notes... I mutes after m plays, m mutes after I plays etc.
always to some steady rhythm w metronome.

What's this? No up stroke using M? Did I misunderstand the post? Perhaps I should return to flamenco 101, but what's wrong with using M for an upstroke? I must not be reading this right... I had a few shots of Early Times tonight, but I promise that I'm not drunk. LOL What's wrong with I-up-M-up-I-up-M-up... My problem is I played to much damn classical. I still let my thumb float to much... And now I'm questioning my picado...

@ Ricardo Thanks i'll try that.

haha i've tried this for 5 minutes so far, but i can already tell this is going to help a lot. the short bursts of 3 notes allows me to practice it fast but also i know right away if i did it incorrectly as well.

@ shawn ahhh i see where your coming from, this is an issue of perspective, the "up" stroke i'm referring to would be the fingers actually moving down from the perspective of the guitar, but from perspective of my hand and position of fingers, it'd be moving up.

i think what i'm referring to is I(down) M(down) M(up) I (Down).....also my nails might have been catching....so i cut them off for the sake of trying to learn this the correct way. but haha may have just made it harder for myself, we'll see.
