It's still a sad statement that somebody runs around deleting their public
forum posts this way. I think it's stupid, honestly.

Kevin -> RE: Romerito Deleted (May 15 2012 18:27:14)

Hi everyone. Sorry I left so abruptly. I have my reasons, some of which are personal and others which I feel need to be addressed. This is an alternative account I had started and forgot about quite awhile ago and this will be the only time I log on.

So, although I left abruptly, this thread represents some of why I left; Lots of BS speculation and gossip. Don’t want this to turn into a long post but I do want to briefly explain a few things.

So, there are reasons that I left and there are reasons that I deleted the account. The reasons are not totally mutually exclusive.
Reasons I left:
1) The foro has been an unproductive practice for me as far as my own development.
My goal has always been to help people who come into the game late and I spent many hours transcribing materials and sharing the knowledge that I acquired by apprenticing with two great flamencos. However, it is time to be more productive for me.
2) The foro does not come anywhere near reaching its potential.
This is something that has always bothered me because in many ways, the foro is the only outlet I had while in school. To log in and find photoshop threads was fun, but when you are hoping for flamenco…???
Reasons I deleted threads:
1) Dead Threads
The main reason was that there were so many dead ones as far as transcriptions were concerned. The short-lived tab feature was nice and could have influenced my decision but, there were quite a few that, when you clicked on the gp5 button, didn’t open. This mostly occurred because something happened with the file host.
2) Moving in to a new phase in my life
Yes, for those speculating on deleting the threads as a career choice. Some of the material will go into my dissertation. The whole idea is to make the dissertation available as a book. For those that are interested, the book is a music theory for flamenco that is comparative. I compare flamenco with the many musics and movements that have influenced it; 17th century Baroque, 19th century Romanticism and Orientalism, Arabic, Indian, Jewish, Andalusian, Gypsy, Spanish popular, and jazz. One goal is to challenge what people THINK they know about flamenco. Another is to demonstrate the difficulties in comparing (Bb-D-Bb-D-E; does a jazz spelling-Bb#11 no 3rd- correctly represent what is going on. That e is a pedal and to call it a #11th says nothing about its function.)
There is much more but the post is long enough.

There are many more reasons and I didn't think it was going to be a big deal. I really thought my posts were insignificant. Go figure.

To the people that made assumptions and didn’t even show concern for why I might be gone…well, enough said I guess.

To the people that appreciated what I did over the years and maybe even expressed concern over my situation…THANK YOU.

EDIT:
@Nenedk:
In response to Nenadk's comment that I benefited from conversations on the foro I have to reply that, yes, to some extent I did benefit (very little, I learned more at Norman's site - and even that was work that I was already in the process of doing. His site, and the Soler Diaz book, made my work easier of course). However, my scholarly ideas are all original. They are a hybrid of cultural and socio-historical analysis and musical analysis.

@Malakka:
Sorry about the lesson thing. People began to miss and I can't help but wonder if people devalue things that are free. It got to be annoying waiting on Skype for students to call. If that didn't happen with you, I am sorry.

malakka -> RE: Romerito Deleted (May 15 2012 18:51:42)

Kevin,

Thank you for posting. I am sorry to see you leave as I have always thought that your contributions were great and I always enjoyed reading them and learned quite a bit over the years. You and Ricardo have given a lot to the Foro and I have benefited greatly from your posts. I do wish your posts had remained for others to learn...

You and I had connected to do some skype lessons, but unfortunately it did not work out. I wish it had as I am sure I could have learned a lot from the lessons. I had thought they were part of your study for your dissertation. Anyway, my loss...

Best wishes to you and your academic and flamenco pursuits and I really look forward to your book.

Regards,

William

Be sure to let us know when the book is available. I've enjoyed your posts on this forum.

Good luck!

Kevin -> RE: Romerito Deleted (May 15 2012 20:28:53)

Thanks. Some notes.

@Ricardo:
I did attempt to erase only what I thought I needed to, but that meant trying to go through 3000+ posts. In the end, the few things I wanted to get rid of outweighed everything else. Not happy about it but...

I would have liked a record of what I posted as well and, had I thought of it when I joined, I would have made a journal detailing my posts so I could refer back to them. I think they would complement my thesis. They would also document how foreign flamencos discourse about flamenco (IMO, very similar to how flamencos argue).

It wasn't without thought that I deleted the account. There are some problems I couldn't foresee and that troubles me. As I mentioned above, I never really thought my posts were valuable. I just shared what I felt I knew. One of the things I DID NOT foresee is how people will perceive me in the future when I return to the foro.

Hopefully by then I will be so good and everyone will have forgotten.[:D]

Tomrocker -> RE: Romerito Deleted (May 15 2012 22:07:45)

Kevin, can you post a link to your blog? THanks!!

cathulu -> RE: Romerito Deleted (May 21 2012 0:57:30)

What the heck is going on? You are moving on, fair enough, but the rational does not hold water imho - it sounds bogus to me. Contrived.

Surprised admin would delete all of your posts. Facebook wouldn't [;)]

Anders Eliasson -> RE: Romerito Deleted (May 21 2012 7:38:09)

Kevin
I wish you the best and of course, there´s life without the forum and with a forum without you as a member.

My feelings after having read a lod of your posts and now this pompous adiós is that you maybe have put to much importance in the forum as a flamenco source and in yourself as a member. The forum is just a forum and you were just a member of that forum.
I share many of your thoughts about what is going on here, but I just click the little red cross and close the page when I dont find interesting things.

Remember, the most important thing in music is to play it. Discussions are only words. Nothing else. Nevermind how interesting they are.

Does anyone know if this dissertation ("...a music theory for flamenco that is comparative. I compare flamenco with the many musics and movements that have influenced it; 17th century Baroque, 19th century Romanticism and Orientalism, Arabic, Indian, Jewish, Andalusian, Gypsy, Spanish popular, and jazz.") got completed? Or if anyone knows Kevin's full name I can search in the dissertation and theses databases.

Thanks!

Schieper -> RE: Romerito Deleted (Oct. 25 2017 9:11:56)

Much to serious :-)

Every time I play a compass for a visiting individual I get a "Yeah, nice. Can you also maybe do something famous. Like that song from Metallica??" So i do the Nothing Else matter routine which is gets me the "AWESOME" I have been fishing for.

For the kids it is currently "The Gruffallo song" for which they come and collect daddy out of his basement.

Not sure where to find the final version. I can forward you an early draft I received in email. Your email is hidden so shoot me an email and I will send it. FYI, the version I have is 2011, and a post he made in 2016 said "finishing up in a couple weeks..." [:D]

i occasionally throw in "Stairway to Heaven" por solea or "Smells like Teen Spirit" por tangos just to see if anyone's actually listening....

Ricardo -> RE: Romerito Deleted (Oct. 26 2017 20:53:30)

I was showing the young kids Metallica the other day....it truly is some special music from a special time IMO.

The Japanese melody ' Sakura, sakura' from the Christopher Parkening classical method works well por solea, it's in E phrygian.
Could you tab that Tangos por Teen Spirit?

I hope I did not offend any serious or professional writers or important Flamencolocagadas by referring to Solea as being in E phrygian. If I did offend, I shall allow the comment to stand and undergo critical review wilst waiting for my publisher to post an advance for my new book into my bank account. I shall be folding in any forthcoming critique of my comments into my next book, 'Down and Out in Albany and San Jose'.

well, it's just the chords really. when i'm playing for dance classes and they're banging away at footwork and I play little cuadrado things like

Bb, A;
Bb, A;
F, C, Bb, A

many variations of the long phrase (D-, C, Bb, A, etc.) and every now and then throw in: F, Bb, Ab, Db (F, Bb barred at 1st fret, Ab, Db barred at 4th fret) - something like this:

F____F______Bb_Bb____Ab____Ab____Db_Db__
1_+__2_+_3__+_4__+__5__+__6___+_7__+__8_+_
