Just a thoiught. It's a long time since I have been to Singapore. Is there now a causeway to Sentosa? I think someone mentioned it on TV. In my day it was boat or by cable car.

Anders I know you come from a flat lowland country but really[:D] It is what you use to go up mountains but it is not a ski-lift or chair lift as you have lots of people in the car 10 - 50. In Barcelona there is one that crosses the harbour. There are also two of them in the Sierra Nevada. Hows my blanca? Enough of this reading the foro, get back to work [:D][:D][:D]

Now Tom those are real cable cars. OK they only fly when they hit the bumps to hard but what wonderful things. I only had one ride when I was in SF but I remember it well.[:D] I assume they are still running; I hope so.

Nigel; I think the cable cars will run as long as there are hills in San Francisco! [:D] About 30 years ago one brilliant San Francisco Mayor decided to close down the Cable Cars which had operated since 1873. New diesel busses were pressed into service to climb those lovely steep San Francisco hills. Guess what happened? The busses broke down within a few days of use as the hills were too much even for modern technology! The Cable Cars were quickly pressed back into service. The nice thing about politics is you get to have things your way. Your way may be of no value because you think you know more then those that came before us! [:D]

We had electrical cable cars in Copenhagen untill late 70th, where they were replaced by diesel busse. It's considered to be one of the biggest traffical errors that they got replaced.

Yeah Anders, In the 30's till the late '50s, Electric Tramcars were a really great way of getting around Glasgow... fast , efficient and regular, and kept people in employment. But they ditched them in favour of broadning the streets to give more room for the motor car. And now there is all this congestion, greenhouse gases, and parking meters.. Have we really progressed that much since the '50s? For instance, we live in a village called Newtonhill...there is a train station there that will take any commuter up to Aberdeen in 5 minutes. Problem is that, in the privatised Rail Network that we have now...nobody stops here anymore... so there is no train service. So everybody takes their cars to town. 'Cos they're all privitazed Companies looking to make money! Screw Global Warming etc...how much did we make? Believe me folks, that the "Norm" that you accept, is the "Norm" that you are willing to accept because you are maybe too caught up in your own life and affairs! It's only natural. But remember that every little bit of Civil Liberties that you give up, is something that neither you (or your kids) will ever, ever see again. When I was young I read George Orwell as a piece of entertaining literature... and I would have never have believed it would have had the slightest possibility of ever coming true!! Gimme an "F", Gimme a "U " gimme a "C" gimme a.... What's that spell?...What's that spell.......? LOL! Ron

LOL Back! Well just for the weekend till wednesday morning. I've been trying to hide my long fingernails, hope I won't get caught or I won't be allowed home for a weekend. I'm presently attempting to get out of combat vocations, hopefully into some admin or music-related job. Anyway, yup, cable cars will always be there, they're like one of the trademarks of Sentosa. And they built a causeway when I was quite young too, so it's now accessible by car, bus or cable car. Maybe a ferry too but I'm not really sure, haven't been there in a long time.. [:D] The ones to Sentosa island are smaller and cube like though, suspended in mid air, unlike those in San Francisco. And thank goodness, no accidents all these years. Oh yes Anders, think you'd have heard of my 2 school juniors I introduced to you? I'd expect a guitar for that as commission. [:)] Just kidding, but I do hope to get a classical from you one day. Buenos dias amigo. Good to here the cable car is still there. Hopefully the island is not too congested now you can drive there. Somehow I liked the lack of traffic and the red and green London buses. Now the finger nails sound risky. Quite how you hide them I'm not sure.Can you not visit some doctor and get a certificate saying that without your nails you will suffer calcium deficiency? Crazier things have worked in the past[:D] As for the spanish remember that if you can read it you can say it so I think it is an easy language to learn remotely. One thing I can add is that now I spend a lot of time in Spain it is evident that many spaniards incorrectly use verbs. You can get a long way without learning those 16 verb forms. I bought a lot of childrens books (9 to 16 years) and that really helped. Things I hadn't read as a kid like "War of the Worlds" and Around the world in 80 days" and "Huckleberry Finn". Could send you some if you like? Anyway the two years must be flying by now [8\|] Buenos suerte

Well I'm out now! I've got an 8 to 5 job which allows me to keep the nails! [:D] Just had my last day in camp and now all I have to do is wait for my new job on Monday. Now I'll start playing guitar and learning Spanish everyday, and of course, exercising. I've been gaining substantial weight since I enlisted into the Armed Forces in April. Irony isn't it? [:)] Too much carbos and I do barely any exercise. Anyway, I'd be grateful for any advice and resources on learning Spanish. Thanks, Cheston

Olger Portilla is an NUS lecturer (I believe) who also teaches Spanish part time at Cambridge Language center in Peninsula plaza. He is VERY good. I don't know if he is still there but ask for him if you get the chance. (PS it's pronounced "Ol-Her Por-tiya" if you're asking at the counter.)
