El Polaco -> Purfling depth question (Apr. 26 2012 13:05:20)

Simple question about top purfling: are the purfling strips on the top inlaid into a shallow channel with the binding next to it in the full 1/4" channel or are the purfling strips inlaid to the same depth as the binding ie 1/4" or there abouts?

Courtnall shows them inlaid to about 1.5 mm into the top. (pg. 264)

LMI sells all the colors in 1/4" so I assumed they are stacked with the binding...

Just a bit confused and wanted to order them today with the bending iron.

Thanks guys...

Jorge

I often cut my purflings from sheets of veneer, and I make them the same height as the binding.

I do it this way on both the top and the back. On the top I only make the purfling channel some 1,5 - 1,8mm deep. Less than the thickness of the soundboard.
Its believed to be the strongest way of doing things. Wheater it has any importance, I dont know. I just like doing it neat and controlled

Great photo Anders! A picture is worth a thousand words. I have seen both in books and it seems to my novice pea brain that not routing out so much of the top/side joint would be stronger somehow... At least during assembly.

Question 2 on the same subject,

Do you route in the back strip or do you join it in? I am talking about a simple thin rosewood strip not a fancy multi line affair.

Jorge.

I do they same as Anders, just my preference. Join the back strip in, you will have a nice clean tight fit every time and no router oops to worry about.

Anders Eliasson -> RE: Purfling depth question (Apr. 27 2012 16:33:36)

I join

Stephen Eden -> RE: Purfling depth question (Apr. 28 2012 8:58:45)

I make the perflings the same height as the bindings. I only use 1.5mm perflings and 2mm bindings so its not going to effect strength.

I too join the centre strip.
