Kalo -> Online Lessons Jason Vs. Jose (Apr. 21 2012 20:33:35)

Hi all,

I am not sure if this has been discussed..

Just curious to know if anyone has used either Jason's online lessons or Jose's!

Jason who is GRACIOUS enough to have a website in which he posted some FREE online lessons...

I copied his Sevillanas and learnt his Buleria Compas.

I have to admit on the Buleria Compas I have four measures left of that compas where I can hear the count but can't figure out what he is doing.

I cheated and looked at the tab, but, have to admit I am awful at reading it as it is in 12/8 time and the tab looks wierd.

The good thing I found out is that when starting to take lessons with Jason he offers a playback (sylibus) tab via midi.

I think this is cool because if you can't understand what he is doing, you can play the tab back with midi SLOW.

Okay, so my questions is....Does Jose's website offer the same thing via tab??

Can you go back and play it via midi..

When looking at Jose's lesson's his videos look more in depth...

I am just wondering who's on line lesson I should sign up for...

Any input on the difference would be cool...

Thanks,

Kalo

kudo -> RE: Online Lessons Jason Vs. Jose (Apr. 21 2012 20:50:07)

I have had both of them for 2 months

Jason- as you said, more of that stuff, i find his stuff is electronically slowed down, not real-time slow down videos. its exactly the stuff he has on youtube, except covering more palos and more of that sylibus stuff. his stuff is HARDER than tanakas, and sometime stuff are modern. the gap between the levels he has are too big!

Jose- has midi, he is more in depth in explanation, he is slower (that it can get boring sometimes) his stuff is EASIER and has more traditional material. the gap between the levels he has is good enough. he breaks everything down VERY WELL and plays in real time slowed down

personally i think for those starting out , go with Jose, but if you are really advanced, then go with Jason.
I personally learned a lot more from Jose than Jason

I used them both

no he doesn't .. but you really won't need any tab to learn his material because he breaks everything and talks about every detail ... he offers tabs but no midi

check the following threads:

my opinion is :

-if you think you're more likely to be a beginner-intermediate player go for Tanaka but keep in mind that jose has many advanced stuff
-if you think you're an intermediate-advance player go for Mcguire

kudo -> RE: Online Lessons Jason Vs. Jose (Apr. 21 2012 20:52:03)

check out Elie's videos here, because Elie was like a hardcore student ( i dont know what the right word would be) of Jose's website, watch him play!

kudo -> RE: Online Lessons Jason Vs. Jose (Apr. 21 2012 20:54:39)

the best way to learn online, I personally think is online webcam skype lessons

Kalo -> RE: Online Lessons Jason Vs. Jose (Apr. 21 2012 21:08:26)

Thanks Guys,

I will check out the links provide and I believe I am intermediate...

I've checked out Jose's material and they do seem a little easier than Jason's..

Maybe I can learn off him first and then one day go to Jason's..

Unforunately, skype webcam for me might be a little bit too expensive..

Though I will keep it in mind one day down the line...

Thanks again,

Kalo

Pawo -> RE: Online Lessons Jason Vs. Jose (Apr. 21 2012 21:33:24)

I've used both sites....swapping back and forth between the two...one month minimum sign up with each....learnt lots from both...different ways of communicating on each...

Also used Adam del Monte's online lessons....fewer lessons but very detailed with tabs and notation....no slowed down video though. Might be worth checking out....you buy individual lessons rather than subscribe: https://www.newlearningvision.com/

Also Ricardo Marlow has some lessons posted at http://www.flamenco-teacher.com/index.jsp

Examining all these players techniques up close has been has helpful for me

Hope this is of use

Cheers

Kalo -> RE: Online Lessons Jason Vs. Jose (Apr. 21 2012 21:36:24)

Oh, I've checked out Elie's playing and it is AWESOME!

My question to him is what level did you start out playing when you took lessons from Jose's site...

It's all good..

Thanks,

Kalo

TGerman -> RE: Online Lessons Jason Vs. Jose (Apr. 21 2012 23:16:15)

Is Jose actively keeping up with his website? I have not seen anything posted at all in quite a few months, not even a mention of what he has been up to.

I agree with Pawo, using both Jose's and Jason's site along with Adam and Ricardo's lessons is the best way to go.

I know who the GREAT Ricardo is, but, who is Adam? Is that Adam Del Monte?

Thanks,

Munin -> RE: Online Lessons Jason Vs. Jose (Apr. 22 2012 4:30:41)

I personally think Adam has the most useful, in-depth and most authentically flamenco lessons out there. He is a fantastic player but also a great teacher. I found Jose and Jason often not really explaining what they are actually doing. I wish Adam had more lessons though.

marduk -> RE: Online Lessons Jason Vs. Jose (Apr. 22 2012 8:14:28)

I use Jason's website a lot and really enjoy it. its often the first place I go when i need to work out a new thing at dance class

I have not tried Jose's site though so i cant make a comparison sorry

Kalo -> RE: Online Lessons Jason Vs. Jose (Apr. 22 2012 15:32:36)

Thanks for everyones response...

I think I will try Jose's website first [:)]

Who is Adam???

thank you Kalo I appreciate your nice comment [:)]

my level was mmmm ... 5 years (or little bit more) of learning classical guitar and some flamenco after that .. but I wasn't good at flamenco IMO

anyway before joining tanaka I was exactly at this level, you can see i had problems with rasgueados and kinda still [&:]:

I agree with that .

Shawn Brock -> RE: Online Lessons Jason Vs. Jose (Apr. 24 2012 0:52:57)

I have used Jose's site and found it to be more than worth the money. I can't say I ever learned any of his tunes all the way through, mostly because I didn't care for a lot of the stuff... All of the technique was helpful though. I like the fact that he gives a lot of information (to much at times), but to much is better than not enough... And I think one is better off to learn the tunes all the way through. I'm sure I would have picked up something from each that would have been useful to me in the future. Plus the more one learns the easier it is to learn, thus speeding up the whole process...

I do wish he would show you technique, and then some music which utilizes what you just learned. This encourages practice and gives a more sound reason behind what you have learned. This seems like it would bring some flow to his program. For anyone who's past the stage of an out and out beginner, you don't really know what the recommended starting point should be.

When I started I took the subscription option which was supposed to let you download videos. What I experienced was that you could only download some of the videos. So to me the $15 subscription is a better choice.

It does seem like Jose isn't adding new material to his site, though he already has a lot posted. I plan on trying Jason's site also soon.

Also I'm going to beg Ricardo for some Skype lessons. Its still not as good as lessons in person by any means, but its better than no lessons at all. I get the feeling that Ricardo would be as flexible as he could be to help someone out as long as you work on what he teaches, and keep him paid up...

2013 will be my year to study in Spain, and that's already decided! I have already started saving for my first 1 month trip... If I go over and live it, I will learn it...

Kalo -> RE: Online Lessons Jason Vs. Jose (Apr. 24 2012 2:46:23)

Hi Shawn Brock,

So, if you thought Jose's website was some what helpful...

How are you learning flamenco now?

The only means I would have to learn MORE is through Jason's website or Jose's.

I've learnt FREE Jason's sevillanas, and his buleria compas 1

I am sure though that his lesson's get tougher..

In the future I plan to take skype from Ricardo...

they get much tougher

This is why I wish someone would put a website out for beginner/intermediate stuff...

I guess that is what the Graf-Martinez books are for!

I still might give Jose's a shot..

Kalo

marduk -> RE: Online Lessons Jason Vs. Jose (Apr. 24 2012 8:36:46)

I find the dance and cante accompaniment videos at jasons site help me a lot, and there is enough beginner stuff to make the intermediate stuff feel easier

I have been taking little remates or llamadas and other little ideas out of the harder falsetas, sometimes just one or 2 compas worth of the falseta

now im starting to tackle some of the intermediate ones and they are making sense

I use some of the graf stuff too

I'd struggled with the same issue, but....
In the end it is all about you studying.
I made the mistake subscribing to a lot of different websites, buying some books /dvds and all was to hard to begin, until I just picked something reasonably and started studying.

Regarding websites:

I prefer the pay-per-palo (or whatever you'd like to call it), you can always revisit it the next month.
Sites like that:
http://www.flamenco-teacher.com/
https://www.newlearningvision.com/

Other sites like:
http://www.tomaflamenco.com/en (very nice bulerias compas lesson)
http://www.flamencoguitarlesson.com (Jose tanaka, very well instructed)
http://www.flamenco-lessons.com/ (Jason McGuire, an overwhelming amount of information, what I like best were the Cante/Dance accompaniments and the Compas workshops)
http://www.flamenco-classes.com/ (Pedro Cortes, very well explained, but to slow)

have the monthly subscription policy.
To bad, because people get sick, have other things to do, and before you know it its the end of the month.

For books I can recommend
Traite de guitare Flamenco from Herrero and Worms.
It covers somewhat all with traditional and modern stuff.

Good luck on your journey and keep focussed!

Kalo -> RE: Online Lessons Jason Vs. Jose (Apr. 24 2012 14:41:18)

Hi Kozz,

I will look at the stuff you suggested...GREAT Links and info.

I've joined flamenco.teacher.com and learnt a buleria lesson from Ricardo...

This is AFTER I learnt Jason's Buleria compas 1

Just recently I purchased from flamenco.teacher, Ricardo's Solea por Buleria..

I am able to most of the compas...Learning the falsetta 1 slowly

Thanks for all the wonderful responses!

Kalo

Shawn Brock -> RE: Online Lessons Jason Vs. Jose (Apr. 24 2012 19:37:49)

Hey Kalo,

As for how I'm learning flamenco now... I'm still subscribing to Jose's site. For what it is, I think its great. I'm sure that I have learned $100s worth of stuff from him. I didn't mean to sound like I was putting it down or anything, just pointing out a few things which I thought could be better.

I also sit around with records and learn stuff that way. It gets a little more complex, but is a great way to learn, and its free and helps the ear... If I hear something on Youtube which I like, I do my best to learn it a little at a time...

I live in Las Vegas and we don't have but a few flamencos here. One guy don't really have the time to give lessons, and the other guy was just a wreck. I took 3 lessons from him back in December and his state of drunkenness got deeper and deeper with each lesson. Finely on my third lesson, he couldn't sit up, that's when I called it quits... LOL I'm not a prude and have no problem with getting on a good drunk, I just don't want to pay someone for lessons when they are so blown away that they can't speak...

Some time back I had per posed that some of us get a Skype study group going. If everyone in the group was subscribed to the same site, we could take the same lessons and get together on Skype to talk about them and help one another. The idea never got off the ground, and I'm probably partly to blame for that.

very nice saying and for me it is even twice that value

Shawn could you please tell me what was the last lesson posted there ? what was jose's last post ? any update to his tango Lluvia ? thank you

Kalo take my word and join Jose, you won't regret it.[;)]

Hey Shawn, to bad about the teacher situation. One not having the time to teach, and the other to WASTED to teach [:@]

The Skype study group seems like a great idea[:D]

Thanks Elie, I am highly considering Jose's for sure and hopefully I can find some stuff that I can learn.

One of things I think would be cool is to learn some styles and hopefully Jose offers backing Palmas tracks that he uses in his video...

I would love to learn then post my playing so you can all see if I am on the right track...

Thanks again,

Kalo

Shawn Brock -> RE: Online Lessons Jason Vs. Jose (Apr. 25 2012 16:02:13)

@ Elie, I knew you would bring up the Lluvia Tangos! That's also been the one I have been waiting on! He has not updated it yet. To tell you the truth, I haven't noticed any new lessons added on there during my membership. I joined in January, stopped for most of March, and rejoined last week. I Love his Lluvia Tangos, and am thinking of just learning it from the slowed down performance. That is also one of the videos that you can download, so that would make it a little easier...

@ Kalo, Jose only has a few backing tracks on the site. He does offer backing tracks on iTunes though. I have bought a few from him and found them to be helpful. Come on and sign up, after all its only $15 for the basic monthly. I promise you'll learn more than $15 worth of stuff in a month...

Maybe we can get a Skype study group going after all... I think that at least it would be worth a try...

Hi Shawn,

I will for sure consider joing Jose's Site..And yeah, maybe one day we can do a group skype lesson...

Nealf,

I wonder what is up Jose's site if he's not answering email to those who have joined his on line site.

He should at least take that off his advertisement...

Still, I think I would join to check it out.

Kalo

thank you for the reply Shawn actually I've already learned the second Lluvia from the slowed down performance I just hoped he adds more falsetas from the original track but he seems to add falsetas not related the original one
