Long ago Howard I. Chapelle wrote the classic "Boatbuilding". It is a comprehensive guide to the design, tools, processes and techniques of building wooden boats.

In the chapter on setting up the workshop Chapelle emphasizes that an essential piece of equipment is a comfortable chair, to sit in while puzzling out a problem, or just to relax and rest.

Curious. Do you speak to the dog in Dutch, Spanish or English?

estebanana -> RE: 3 good reasons for having an armchair in the workshop (Apr. 21 2012 22:45:37)

Probably "Spengdanish"...

So are you saying it's important for the guitar to also rest in the chair?

hamia -> RE: 3 good reasons for having an armchair in the workshop (Apr. 22 2012 0:26:18)

That´s a nice looking dog - is it a Scottish terrier? He probably knows a thing or two about guitar making by now!

Nimbus looks comfortable...Aurora was happy to see a picture of him.

Anders Eliasson -> RE: 3 good reasons for having an armchair in the workshop (Apr. 22 2012 8:18:27)

Nimbus is from Madrid (West Higland white Terrier)With him I speak pingu, danish and Spanish. No english.. Actually, I never speak english or maybe just a few time a year. Chapelle was right and I also have a chair where I build boats. Chairs are important. Right now I sit in a chair.
The whole idea of having a chair in the workshop is that its anti efectivity... It goes against the way our society is meant to funcion. Its a wonderfull waste of time to just sit down and do nothing. Everyone should do it a lot more and the world would be a better place.
Work nowadays means efectivity and cheating... Cheating... Did you know that a mechanic working in a big garage needs to be able to write bills for 10 hours of work a day. And at the same time he works 7,5 - 8 hours a day... That translates into cheating. Sitting down in my chair thinking about penguins and other important things is my personal protest against the way the world is heading.

I like the dog!!

keith -> RE: 3 good reasons for having an armchair in the workshop (Apr. 22 2012 11:20:49)

the chair also has another function--it allows someone to do 12 ounce curls (drinking beer) in comfort.

XXX -> RE: 3 good reasons for having an armchair in the workshop (Apr. 22 2012 13:37:22)

I think walking around is also good for thinking, but sitting is also nice [:D]
(anybody tried lying?)

Sean -> RE: 3 good reasons for having an armchair in the workshop (Apr. 22 2012 14:03:10)

I sit down and have a personal protest every morning for the way the world is going also, only my chair has a flush handle. I try not to protest in anger[:@] it's usually more of a peaceful protest, a time to reflect or catch up on some reading [:D]

All kidding aside I agree with you 100% Anders

Right on, Anders!

I kinda do the same thing these days...

"Sometimes I just sits and thinks......and sometimes I just sits...."

cheers,

Ron

Be carefull. El Quijote is a very long and old book. Some people love it, but I find it boring. Besides, I like to read and and not listen to books. This way you take more breaks, think about life, do nothing.... All good stuff

Well, he´s a lovely dog. And obviously feels quite entitled to sit in the main chair. I guess after all these years he´s got a fair bit of guitar making experience and perhaps sees himself as your equal!

Anyway, doing nothing has a lot to be said for it. One of the words I most hate is "growth" - why do we always have to grow. Pretty soon, if we leave our moronic PM in charge much longer they´ll have paved over half of the uk countryside. I´ve never voted in my life but UKIP has got my vote next time. Hope others feel the same. Sorry to turn this into a political broadcast!

I don't know about you guys but I have a lot of catching up to do so there will be no sitting around for me for a long time!!! [8|]

Anders Eliasson -> RE: 3 good reasons for having an armchair in the workshop (Apr. 24 2012 15:56:52)

Sitting down once in a while and let the brain wander away from your work is one of the best ways to avoid errors. I speak out of experience.
When I started, I made a piece of white wood where I wrote ¡No demasiado rápido! (Not to fast) This I have printed in my head now and its one of the best advices I can give.
