Bert Weedon the English guitarist whose tutor book "Play In A Day" was used by practically every famous British Rock guitarist as teenage kids learning the guitar, passed away today too.

Man, they're dropping like flies...

R.I.P. Bert

cheers,

Ron

Speaking of 4/20, an 8-foot bronze statue of Willie Nelson, one of America's most famous advocates of the weed, is being unveiled today here in Austin. I may make it down town to see it....

Well you can guess what time to arrive. If he's there, get him to sign your guitar [;)]

Only 8'? BWWWWHAHAA ! my, my pretty short by Texas Hero standards. I bet Billy Gibbons' will be 16' feet high 'cause he's twice as good.

And half of that his beard!~

.Willie's not a very big guy...and well, Gibbons was declared Texas Musician of 2012 by the Texas Commission of the Arts, after all. And his statue is no doubt going to be in his home town, Houston. As I'm sure you know, everything is bigger in Houston: cars, hats, butts, egos, bookkeeping scams, bankruptcies...

I started with his book in 1968, on my Dad's friend's Fender Mustang and no amp. He was a hip, young pro photographer with his Asahi Pentax Spotmatic and flowery, frilly shirts. I am beginning to understand where my hobbies came from now [;)]

RIP Bert

Morante -> RE: Oh no! "The Weed" has gone too! (Apr. 21 2012 13:45:11)

I started on "Over the seas to Skye"!!! On my first gig, the opening chord was D an I froze: couldn´t remember how to play it. Later, playing as telonero for Cream, my A string broke.

There are stars and wannabees[:-]

Hey, Richard, will the statue include Willie's guitar with its shredded soundboard? Willie ought to give that guitar to the Smithsonian, in order to preserve it as a national treasure.

Cheers,

Bill

It has lots of signatures, too - though I don't see Paco's... [;)]

As it turns out, I didn't make it down town to the unveiling. Bad case of bronchitis. First time I've been sick in at least a couple of years.

The newspaper article said the statue includes the guitar. It also said that as the sculptor began the clay model he had "Whiskey River" on the stereo, so I assume the guitar in the statue will be realistic.

Grateful Dog! [:D]

Just chanced upon this curious piece of amateur musicology, which suggests a possible - if distant - flamenco connection:

"There's long been an organic unity to Nelson's signature sound--the way his conversational phrasing plays against the staccato runs of his gypsy guitar..."
