Paul Magnussen -> Who is (or was) Dennis Jones? (Apr. 5 2012 23:35:49)

I came across this by accident on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/American-Flamenco-Guitar-Dennis-Jones/dp/B000BGQTI0/ref=sr_1_160?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1333668555&sr=1-160

The samples don’t seem to be Flamenco at all to me, just a series of vaguely-Flamenco-like noises. The titles aren’t reassuring either.

Anyone know any more? Just curious.

"By 1966 he was showing his mastery of the flamenco techniques, including a new one of his own -- a continuous roll."

'nuff said. [8|]

flamenco in P-town? making it up as he goes? i bet his $99 tape recorder broke before he could record his flamenco-ized judy garland, show tunes and the village people. now that would be some interesting flamenco. [:D]

Guys, please stop denigrating a "master flamenco guitarist." After all, when has any of you been called a "master musician in the genre of flamenco?" You're all just jealous!

He's a golden god! Who else could infuse the battle of Iwo Jima, a thunderstorm, and Flamenco into one?

Munin -> RE: Who is (or was) Dennis Jones? (Apr. 9 2012 20:04:39)

Find it hard to hate on him really. He just seems like a fairly average guy who picked up a bunch of different stuff from different genres and does his own thing. I think he's technically okay actually (as a non-flamenco player). But it's the press that calls him a "flamenco master", it does not look like he's going around calling himself that. I guess if you're working for the Backwater Town Daily, you'll be happy to get a story like this to spin that way.

first of all i should say i live in massachusetts and know of p-town and have been there once. a story about something other than what p-town is famous for would be news in itself.

"And in a bit of almost magic, as the storm abates, a sparrow joins in and sings what sounds to be an intentional counterpoint to Jones’ guitar work for several minutes"

What? ??

When I was a kid we took a family trip to Cape Cod and ended up in p-town on Carnival Day. Now that was an interesting childhood experience...
