Richard Jernigan -> RE: Morao y Oro - Alain Faucher (Apr. 1 2012 23:50:20)

They're standard classical guitar notation for barres.

The fret is given by a Roman numeral. 1/2 C V is a half-barre at the fifth fret. The left index finger holds down the three treble strings at the fifth fret.

C III is a full barre at the third fret: the left index finger holds down all six strings at the third fret.

The letter C is standard guitar notation for a bar (ceja in Spanish). So if you see ½CV it means a half bar on the fifth fret, and so on.

(p.s. now I see that Richard beat me to it by five seconds with a more complete explanation!)

Ages ago when I started out it took me a while too to figure those out..but enormously helpful once you do.

I own it, too. Yeah nice stuff inside.

apart from Moraitos excessive love of barres

As you've probbaly noticed, in the first half of the third line there's absolutely no need to make a barre for any of those chords; I assume that Faucher wrote it that way because that's what he saw Moraito do.

And yes, it's very nice stuff.
