XXX -> i-Golpe (Jul. 12 2005 9:13:09)

dont know if this was mentioned here already, but i have big probs doing this i-golpe (downstroke golpe).
the strings are always louder than the golpe, and if i try it with more force, than the strings get even more louder [:'(]
second prob is that the basses are louder than the higher strings (1,2, sometimes 3).

i really wonder how you do this. how much hand movement do you have ? how is this movement ? can anyone make a video of it ? that would be very helpfull!

I bet if you experimented with differnet positions, with contacting the soundboard at differnet angles, at expending more force on the golpe and leave less for the rasgueado, etc., you will fidn out what works for you. The main thing is what goes on in your head and no video shows that. Fix the sound you want in your head very clearly adn then find it.

Strike the rosette-that's where the tone and volume is for this golpe.

thx for for the rosette, ill ty that out.

i know, in the end everybody has to find his own way of individualizing a technique, but for practising i need a little "hint", coz for example i dont have a clue whether its only a down movement of the hand, or is it more a circulating one.
to visualize my problem i like to ask you pros something: in which direction does your index finger show at the beginning of an i-golpe ? towards the neck or towards the 1st string ?

Escribano -> RE: i-Golpe (Jul. 13 2005 8:49:03)

I am not a pro but my index finger is loaded behind my thumb and flicks out to strike the tapa just outside the rosette and over an underlying strut for maximum "knock".

You will hit the bass strings more than others and most often there will be a chord on theses strings to make this golpe worthwhile.

ok the knock comes clearer and louder now, but i still have no idea how to get the volume balanced between knock and strings. there are only 2 ways i can imagine to practise:
either i try to concentrate on the loud knocking and delay the string-stroke, or i do it in only one movement, but then the strings get louder and they get far too loud.

i know these things take a LOT of time to practise in order to sound good, but at the moment i dont even know which way of movement i should practise, the first or second way.

Miguel de Maria -> RE: i-Golpe (Jul. 14 2005 15:02:20)

You can change the balance of volume because there are two components to the action: 1, the flick, 2, the stroke of the arm. The flick should be very quick and if you use the right angle, quite loud. However, don't try to "muscle" it. It's more like flicking a wet towel than pushing weights. Figure out how to make the flick loud, but keep the stroke of the arm moderate. That should be waht you need.
