Hurrah!!!! At last!! Someone else who prefers low tension strings. I too always found high tension a pain. I did detect a drop in reponse and volume when I switched from high to low tension, but nothing dramatic. I use Saverez white card strings, basically because it's all I can get in sunny Hull.

Hi nealf!

What scale length is your guitar? medium tension strings feel like highs on larger scale guitars like 660 scale. So, hard tension must feel like extra hard on a larger scale.

I personally like low tension on large scale guitars and even 655 scale.

I tried low tension a few times, and they just feel awful! Buzz way too much. That being said, I've been playing hards for years, so it's no big surprise I'm not used to the lows. I heard the classical guitarist Manuel Barrueco plays with lows. If you don't play that hard, I would think lows would work great. It seems to me that if you have a very responsive/thin top, you could play lightly on low strings and still get a great tone. But if your guitar is built heavily or is kind of dead, you would really struggle to get any volume.

I have used all tensions and just about all types of guitar strings. For years I used extra hard tension strings. Then Juan Serrano convinced me to try medium tension, which I truly enjoy these days.

Mariano Cordoba uses low-tension strings. They are very good for rasgueados and reduce nail ware. Use what works best for you and your guitar.

i started with hannabach extra hard flamenco strings. for some reason i thought i had to take the "hard" way in order to learn fast. but my left hand(im lefty, so it would be you right hand) also wanted strings that are very hard. the strings mentioned above are the result of a year long search; they are the hardest strings i found.
however, now my right hand demanded for lower strings, coz it was really painful to play some pull offs for example.
the first time i put the super low strings on i was amazed. what a clear tone! so sharp and with lots of "highs", as i love it for flamenco! you know the beginning guitar part of entre dos aguas ? my guitar sounds almost like that.
hard to describe a tone, and especially in a foreign language [8D]
