Any advice for purchasing a flamenco guitar?

Hey guys,

If any one could advice on a good flamenco guitar (range: 200$-300$ US). At the moment, I have a Raimundo model 123 you can see its specifications on http://fr.audiofanzine.com/magasins/?idmagasin=27828&mode=affiche&idproduit=51480&id=313496 , it sound beautiful, but hard to play flamenco with due to its wide neck and the strings are far from the fret-board. Any advice would be welcomed.

hm... flamenco gits. have a wider neck than classic i think.
and with the strings: just cut the bridge down!
dont know how much you can play now, but its also possble to play flamenco on a normal guitar, for practising at least...

I would say the Yamaha CG 171-SF is about as good
as you can get for under 350.00 us.

It comes set up the right way for flamenco. Low action,(strings close to fingerboard)
Strings are close to soundboard as well, wich gives an advantage
in many flamenco techniques.

Its not a handmade concert guitar by any means, but its definatly built
and setup exactly like a flamenco guitar should be.

This video is a pretty good example of how the guitar sounds.
Im playing the Yamaha, totally stock, with Saverez Cristal/Alliance
mixed string set. Cristal treble, Alliance basses.

hey todd, ive ordered the alliance trebles cause ive heard that they provide a very very thin and high frequent tone. can you agree to that ? they are made of carbon, the cristal ones are normal i think...

They are very bright but hard on the fingers and don't keep their tone for long, in my opinion.

i think its the best to try it oneself, but its so hard to gain some impressions and informations BEFOREHAND ... and the product names are tooo chaotiC !
besides: even if you ask in a store, no one can tell you any difference because of this mess of names..

One thing to ALWAYS do if taking recommendations from the guy who runs the store:
Ask him or her to play some flamenco.
I find that (not suprisingly) those who cannot do so usually do not know what they are talking about. Remember that this is a largely specialized form of music that many who are not in the know mistake for being "a sort of classical / folk" style.
