El Burdo -> bridge height, one more time (Mar. 7 2012 23:09:11)

I attach a drawing of the bridge I intend to make. (I now draw stuff, thanks all who suggested doing it).

My Santos drawing wants 10mm saddle height and 8mm bridge height. I'd like to try it at 6mm and 8mm as those seem to be the most popular flamenco dimensions.

But, when I draw out the path of the string - so it doesn't bite against the exit edge of the tie block - it is, I assume, far too close to the top?

So I guess I have to bring the angle down, or raise the height of the tie block. It doesn't seem right to have a tie block as high as than the saddle so I 'll ditch that. And I can see no benefit to angle it down either.

Is it OK to put the string under duress at the leading edge of the tie block? i.e. having a gentle angle coming in, but a sharper angle coming out? Doesn't seem safe to me, unless you sell strings.

The only other choice is to lower the string holes at the back but anything less than 3mm seems a bit dangerous.

The bottom dome on the bridge will be bigger than it appears and I know you can dig into the bridge at the block, but can't see the point here. I'm using a 2mm dome and 1mm neck inclination. Though when I actually measure it expect something fully 'else' so probably won't cut the final height of the bridge until I can string it up.

Thnaks. God I wish there was a word, thnaks. I'd save hours....

Thanks

Jeff.

You don't drill the string hole at an angle. It goes straight through. Putting an angle on the top of the tie block is a good idea in my opinion.

She will never fly[:o] won't tie properly and no break angle.
I found when starting out that most plans out there were very misleading when it came to bridges. Look at actual pictures of bridges it will help and don't draw your wings as an after thought. A 6mm tie block is not very strong when it has such a steep transition to only 2mm thick wings.
Think low tie block, thicker wings and straight holes

Sounds good.

Sean - I did exactly what you suggested and started by looking at the bridge on my own guitar (a flamenco I made years ago as a one-off exactly along the lines of a Torres guitar but using cypress).

I realised that the break angle was reduced by almost 50% by the upwards force of the loop tie method. My bridge is going to be quite low so I decided to use the 12 hole method. I decided this by looking at some examples on this site. I have also angled the tie plate forward a bit - I think it reduces forces on the inside edge a bit, and looks nice too.

I suppose just tying a knot in the string and using the 6 hole bridge would be as good as the 12 hole method but not so pretty.

I do it like this but without the ugly knots. A simple knot is enough (and a double knot on the high E):

To me that looks odd - the beads AND the knots is too much! If I'm not going to use the threaded method I'll just tie a knot!

Sr. Martins -> RE: bridge height, one more time (Mar. 14 2012 21:14:36)

You can do without the beads but prepare to have the holes chewed up and lots of tuning inconsistencies as the holes get larger on the knot side.
