Ron.M -> Warming up (Jul. 4 2005 20:08:43)

Sean said a while ago something like "I can't stand folk who mess around, trying to warm up, but I really like folk who just pick up the guitar and just get on with it".
(Sorry, Sean...My quote is just how I sort of remember it [:D] )

That really got home to me, 'cos I remember when I was playing Folk music, and you'd get the guitar out of the bag, and start to tune up, but of course there was always that rogue string that sounded OK in one chord and horrible in another.
After a couple of minutes of tuning and trying, someone would always say "Oh for God's sake...can't you just quit that and play the damned thing...LOL!)

I don't know about you guys, but it takes me at least a hour of messing about before I can play anything at all.
I wish I could...but I can't!

(Thought I'd maybe let Sean know in advance in case I visit Cadiz sometime..[:D])

cheers

Ron

"getting it on" is an exellent way of screwing your self up.

to warm up is important.

In self defence, I never said that and if I did I must have been borracho!

To bypass the "warming up thing..." just drink half a bottle of manzanilla. You'll be "warm enough" to "just go on with it" ... perhaps you even start singing[:D][:D]

Yes, an hour works sometimes, but sometimes it's even longer for me, and some days it doesn't happen at all, and finally on some days I get what I have for free, with no warm up. It's a strange deal. I'm sure a logical consistant practise routine would yield better results.

Mark,
are you talking about picado, or normal playing? I find that normal playing comes pretty quickly, but those runs sometimes don't come at all!

On the other hand, I played in a show a couple of weeks ago, and one of the guitarists was extremely upset because he didn't get a chance to warm up before he was on. He sounded OK to me, but he sure took it badly....

Picado, first and foremost, is the hardest for me to warm up, then tremelo, which, I confess, I've let go pretty bad. Then rasquedo, then alzapua. Regular thumb work doesn't seem to need much warm up.
