Anyone else at the concert last night? Any comments? Personally I had a great time! Karenanne

Hi
I was there on Sunday. Great gig indeed! The evening started with some flamenco in the foyer. The music was performed by some great people but it was a bit… ‘fat free flamenco’. No teeth.

I was disappointed that Estrella and Tomatito didn’t play together at all, even for an encore, which would have been magical. They each had their own sets.

Estrella played the first set with the great Alfredo Lagos on guitar and palmas by three more mature flamencos. She played some of the beautiful songs from her album. She had lots of stage presence and really interacted well with the audience and even handled an overenthusiastic fan with great diplomacy.

Tomatito played the second set. It was an all male line up. Of course Tomatito played his fantastic bulerias and Tangos and solo pieces but it all washed over you after a while without the structure of dance and song and overplaying.
He had some great performers with him and another guitarist that looked about 15. The dancing of Juan de Juan stole the show toward the end.

I actually enjoyed Tomatito’s gig at the Albert Hall 2 years ago more than this one.
He had some interesting tabla players and it all seemed more intimate even in such a big venue.

Thanks for the review. Was Estrella's younger brother playing guitar as well ? I read in another critique that he was but find it a bit hard to believe having heard him play not that long ago. Shame that Tomatito and Estrella did not perform together. Also any idea who the mature palmeros were? And yes Juan de Juan is a great dancer from Morón I think.

The really young guitarist was called El Cristi. He was described as 'harmonizing guitarist' but I couldn't hear him at all. The palmeros were Angel Gabarre, La Globo and La Reme. The fist half really was mesmerising but, as someone said on another forum, the Tomatito second half was a little disappointing. The guitarist with Estrela, Alfredo Lagos, was fantastic.

Hi Kate, Quique Morente was listed on the programme so presumably that was her younger brother? I actually enjoyed the Tomatito set - good to hear Churri again too. Would have preferred the sets the other way 'round though. Very hard to top cante with solo guitar. (Well, in my opinion!) As was said earlier - a joint encore would have been amazing and I was hoping for one. Still, was well worth the drive down the M1 and the fact that I had to survive my busiest working day of the year on four and a half hours sleep! Karenanne

That would be Quique, and most likely they kept his sound very low in the mix. [;)]
