I've always been confused about the Yamaha flamenco guitar models. I've heard about CG171SF, CG172SF, and CG182SF. I never knew the differences exactly though, and needed accurate information. I contacted Yamaha, and got this response. I thought it might be of some help. Cheers!

To simplify it, the 171SF was discontinued, and was replaced by the 172SF. For reasons only known to Yamaha, they changed the name of the 172SF to 182SF in all markets except the USA, but it's the same guitar.

I've had the same confusion.

A couple of years ago I played on a Yamaha blanca flamenco model at The Guitar Centre in Palm Beach, Florida. For under 400 bucks it played and sounded pretty damn good. Low action, well-adjusted, and nice crisp sound.

I was tempted to buy it for a practice guitar, but decided to think about it. When I went back it was gone! I asked about the model identfication, etc. and none of the sales guys sounded too interested (Guitar Centre is very much 'steel' inclined - at least thats been my experience).

Since then I've tried playing a few more similar Yamaha instruments, but none of them played like that one. I'm sorry now I didnt buy it at the time. And I still dont know which Yamaha model it was?

2 years ago in Florida? The only model they had in the US at retail centers like GC would have been the CG171SF.

Yamaha also makes the FC but that is a special-order item from Japan.

The CG171SF has been discontinued. I finally played a CG172SF. It wasn't bad but I like the CG171SF better. I'm glad I got mine when I did.
