meencantalaguitarra -> Random question about engraving? (Feb. 26 2012 3:37:43)

A friend of mine recently received a guitar from his father and he would like to dedicate/ commemorate his dad by engraving or in someway placing his fathers signature on the front of the guitar? I was wondering if any experienced guitar builders here have come across a good way to do this without compromising the instrument? Any recommendation would be appreciated .

It depends what you mean by "compromising the instrument." There's a Youtube video of Paco de Lucia signing a guitar, in order to dedicate it to Michael Jackson, with a felt-tipped marker. It would not affect the sound or playability of the guitar but it would be a permanent part of the finish.

I really enjoyed that video of Paco signing that guitar. Was that a Hermanos Sanchis Lopez? It was a very pretty guitar. I believe my friend is looking to give the impression that the signature looks like part of the original creation of the guitar. Like the signature of the builder on a headstock or veneer. I think considering our woodworking experience the sharpie pen might be the inevitable route. there's palace called the "tech shop" that has lazer etching machines, thinking about taking it there, not sure if it can accommodate the shape and contours of a guitar. In the meantime just gathering information. Thanks again for the response. I also very much enjoy your guitar building videos Ethan, gives me a lot of ideas of how I want to set up my workshop.
