AG -> Beginner Questions (Feb. 22 2012 5:25:08)

Hi.

I have a few questions. I realise that some of these questions may have been posted already, but the answers may now be outdated. I am an absolute beginner interested in learning the Flamenco Guitar.
1. What beginner books, online lessons or dvds would you suggest?
2. What beginner guitar would you suggest? - The only Yamaha model available in Australia is the CG182SF and is sells for $650, is it worth it to get started or can you recommend anything else? (maybe a little cheaper)
3. Flamenco Guitarists I should listen to.
4. Also wanted you comments on the following and if you think any of these could help me get started, before I get into flamenco:
a. Guitar Method 5
b. Jamplay
c. Learn and Master Guitar

Your comments will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

absolute beginner? meaning never played a guitar at all?

or just flamenco beginner?

the three sites you listed a, b, c. are probably great resources for learning the guitar, but if you wanna learn flamenco i would say dont bother with these sites.

While they will teach you chords and notes on the fret board that are the same in any form style of guitar including flamenco, it seems a waste of time.
If you wanna learn flamenco online check out these sites. they will teach you these things and all the specific techniques used in flamenco.

1. www.flamenco-teacher.com/
2. www.flamenco-lessons.com/
3. www.flamencoguitarlesson.com/

but get a private teacher and some books too.

Juan Martin, graf martinez books perhaps

El_Tortuga -> RE: Beginner Questions (Feb. 22 2012 15:24:09)

I must differ with Stu on one point. Before you tackle flamenco, you should learn basic chords and scales. All the "guitar friendly" ones.

Start with C Major, and A Natural Minor, they have no sharp or flat notes. Followed by:
G Major and E Natural Minor (1 sharp)
D Major and B Natural Minor (2 sharps)
A Major and F# Natural Minor (3 sharps)
C Major and C# Natural Minor (4 sharps)

These are the "CAGED" scales that are most applicable to guitar in general.

As to chords, your beginner chords should be:

C, C7
G, G7
D, D7, Dm
A, A7, Am
E, E7, Em

F (the one all beginners hate lol)
B7

These are most of the chords that you can play without having to leave the first few frets.

If you have any questions, drop me a PM. I can email PDF files to you if you wish.

I do agree with Stu that learning these will not teach you flamenco. But if you're a total beginner, you need to find your way around the fingerboard first.

And Stu is also right about the Juan Martín and Graf Martínez books, they're solid.

I'd also like some advice on a guitar I can start on. Is the Yamaha CG182SF worth around $650US or should I go for the Yamaha172SF its around $400US (can only get this on ebay - price included postage to Australia).

AG -> RE: Beginner Questions (Feb. 23 2012 10:38:49)

... and Thank you for the advice. My fingers are already starting to hurt - practicing on my 6 year olds Guitar.

KMMI77 -> RE: Beginner Questions (Feb. 23 2012 10:42:07)

where in Australia do you live?

AG -> RE: Beginner Questions (Feb. 23 2012 11:09:36)

I live in Brisbane, on the south side.

good luck with your pursuit of flamenco.

AG-- i am not sure where you are with respect to playing guitar but i would highly recommend to find a teacher of either flamenco or classical guitar rather than tryiing to learn the guitar via non-live/interactive means (e.g., books, on line lessons). playing guitar involves learning new behaviors for your hands and having direct feedback (especially correction of anything you are doing incorrectly) is vital to learning good technique. once you have the technique down pat then i would recommend. there is a rule of thumb that it will take you at least twice as long to unlearn a bad habit as to it would to acquire a new habit.

AG -> RE: Beginner Questions (Feb. 23 2012 23:59:42)

Dont seem to be getting much work done. Hope this doesn't become an obsession. Thanks again everyone. Could anyone recommend any flamenco guitar teachers in Brisbane, or Skype (if you think its an option).

kudo -> RE: Beginner Questions (Feb. 24 2012 0:05:44)

For Skype lessons , I can recommend El_Tortuga (see his post and website above) and I also recommend Ricardo marlow

El_Tortuga -> RE: Beginner Questions (Feb. 24 2012 0:37:48)

I'm good for Skype AG, if we can negotiate the time difference!

I've come across these books in earlier posts and was wandering if it would suite absolute beginners:

Scott Tennant's "Pumping Nylon"
Christopher Parkening's "Guitar method, Vol 1 & 2
