aleksi -> siguriya show (Feb. 14 2012 16:49:24)

Hola,
there was flamenco festival at helsinki and one night was for afficianados and our group was one of the numbers there. We played siguriya...
shot with a basic digicam.
All in all, Im quite satisfyed with what we were able to build, because there was quite much work to it. It was first sigge for all of us and first flamenco what ever to our bansurist :)
Im also not used to play and get the feeling with cajon and so strict rhytm so there was lots of headache how to play together and establish the right kind of mood. This is what we come up with.
Lots of improvement to be done, I know :) but enjoy!

Aleksi,
It was a very good perfomance. I thought the dancer was quite good and of course so was everyone else. Is this the first time you have accompanied? I understand what you mean by strict compas, its takes time to coordinate all the "moving parts".

I am really enjoying this. whats the proper name of the flute thing (is it the same one you hear in "naci en alamo" from vengo? I want one as a lounge instrument :)

Thanks guys!
Sig; I've been accompanyig dance and singing before, but mostly tangos/tientos,buleria and alegria stuff. First siguriya for me. We practiced with the singer first separately with more breathtable compas and then tried with others. Its a different thing to play with a group.

marduk; the flute is bansuri, an indian bambu flute. Its used alot in the indian classical music, Hariprasad Chaurasia plays one. I also love the sound and style of it. Definately you should get one :)

Thanks for posting!

Yes, I agree. I also find it easy to stretch the meter and be sympathetic with just a singer, you need a good listening dancer to keep that feeling going while marking in the copla. I find then it can sound good to be more metered during the foot work. The more people the harder it is to all be stretching together unless you make it clear who's leading and who's following.

There are also siguriyas cantes where they keep metered time and I think that can also sound very good too e.g.
Montse Cortes 'Bendita Sea'
La Tana 'Tus Consejos'
La Macanita 'Háblame Con Franqueza'
El Pele 'Acontecio' etc...

Hi orsonw,
thanks for watching :)

exactly like that. Plus palmas and cajon make one sound that dont stretch, its just "clap" and it doesnt echo or move, percussions are very strict. With guitar the sound can wait, or the arpeggio can be longer if necessary.
thanks for the tips, Ill check them out.
