Ron.M -> What's the Effin' Point of a Mobile Phone? (Feb. 5 2012 18:42:13)

What is the effin' point of a mobile phone when you can never get in contact with anyone who has one?

All you ever get is "Welcome to the Blah Blah Blah Answering Service...." [&:]

I thought these effin' things meant you'd be contactable most of the time?

Obviously not.

I've called 5 people today and all I got was "Welcome to the....."

I even pay about £40 a month for my daughter's mobile phone (started off at £15 but she always overruns her allocation limits [:@]), but I am only ever able to contact her directly 1 time in 10.

Usually it's "Welcome to...." in a bright, cheery, recorded voice, like you were being welcomed to the best f*cking experience of your whole f*cking life!!

At least in the old days you could usually contact someone at work on the landline during the day, or at home in the evenings.
If they were out then the phone just rang, so you'd just ring back later.
No charge involved.

Now, with all this mobile phone crap you get charged 25p or so for NOT getting through....but getting their "Welcome..." service.

Yet every day I see every second person in the street practically walking into lamposts 'cos their heads are buried in their little 2 inch screens.

I asked my daughter why she never has her phone on, since the whole damn reason for me paying for it was so I could always get in contact.

She said, "Oh I keep it switched off to save the battery...." [&:][:@]

Christ! Give me light...pleeeeez! [:D]

cheers,

Ron

I tune my guitar, use the Compas application, check my mail, listen to music, record my video lessons, take vocal memos in meetings, check the street map for a direction, buy from the internet, check my bank account sometimes, read pdf files, make photos, check the social network in a push mode, text and what with colleagues and friends but i confess that i hardly make essential phone calls!!!!

I should add that I now make a living writing apps for them, so I am biased. [8|]

[:@]

So the wife can track with gps your exact location after your late night gigs, then text you about WTF are you doing over there across town????[;)][:D]

HAHA Ron, I have two daughters, the youngest being 18 now. She has had more cell phones than me-she has lost and broke more freakin phones.............When she doesn't answer I call again or send a text until she does.
But the thing is I've told her that her phone is for my convenience, not hers, and that if she wants to keep it, she better pick it up when I call.

And Ricardo, I did put a gps app on both my daughter's phones...................My 25 year old went to China by herself so she liked the idea of me at least being able to know where to start looking if the worst happened. The 18 year old was a but less thrilled but was ok with it. The app sends them a signal and if they respond it shows their location. They have to respond, so it's not like I'm spying on them.

text messages suck too. they're supposed to be fast and convenient but it takes forever to type something and people take forever to write back as if it's an email.

Hey, my daughter is easily reached by cell phone. If I send a couple of e-mails and she doesn't reply, I just call her. I leave a message on her answering service, and she replies to my e-mail. What's wrong with that?[:@]

Out of a U.S. population of 312 million, there are precisely five people who do not carry cell phones with them. I am one of them! I do not want to be available 24/7 for every person who feels his or her message is of such importance that I must be contacted immediately. I still have a landline at home, and if I am not at home, people leave messages, and I respond as soon as I return. It is wonderful to sit on the balcony having a sundowner, a glass of jerez seco in hand, watching the sun go down, or reading a good book, or playing my guitar, uninterrupted by a bloody cell phone going off.

I am often on overseas consulting assignments with the U.S. State Department and a U.S. Defense Department contractor. I do require a cell phone on these gigs, and the Embassy or military facility provides it. That's fine with me because I need it for the assignment. But I have no use for cell phones on my personal time. My attitude toward cell phones may be a function of my advancing age. But every time I see someone crossing a street with a cell phone glued to his or her ear, as if it were a tumor growing out of the ear, I rejoice in my freedom.

Cheers,

Bill

The modern world is increasingly busy - it's nice to take a break. When I was a teenager the UK had a law stopping shops opening on Sundays and I remember thinking how stupid and inconvenient it was. But I rather miss that now.

kudo -> RE: What's the Effin' Point of a Mobile Phone? (Feb. 8 2012 1:35:10)

honestly, I do NOT use my phone anymore! only in Emergencies and I keep it on just in case someone wants to contact me, BUT NO ONE DOES other than my parents!

ever since buying an iPod Touch, I use wi-fi for FREE local text messaging app to any phone & other calling apps such as Skype! all wi-fi based, I surf, read the news, weather, facebook, email, read the foro, listen to 24 HR Online Flamenco Radio (CANALSUR app) and use GPS in maps. thats all I need for the day!

the average time spent on my phone per day is 3 MINUTES!!!
SO THERES NO POINT IN PHONES! WASTE OF MONEY!

Ruphus -> RE: What's the Effin' Point of a Mobile Phone? (Feb. 8 2012 9:37:49)

When they weren´t invented yet, the thought of it appeared fascinating to me.
And when my cousin soldered a mobile device for my brothers very first car phone in our German province, so that he could keep communicating outside of his car, I found that to be absolutely crazy stuff.

But when everybody got one I lost interest, and obtained my fist only a few years ago, so that I could help myslef if lost ways abroad.

These things can be really handy when on the road.

My ringtone is Salt-N-Pepa's "Push It." I wonder how he would've responded to that. [;)]
