akatune -> Seguiriyas chord substitutions (Jan. 26 2012 11:22:13)

Hello folks.

I'm approaching the subject of substituting chords in seguiriyas compas. I want to find some variation in my seguiriyas, and up to now have been playing the standard, basic compas.
There's the obvious substitution of the Gm in place of the Bb. Others that I looked at didn't seem to fit well or sound so good.

So, the question of the day is....What chord substitutions do you like to use in Seguiriyas compas?

Same as any other por medio palo. C7-F of course, Bb7 or Bb9#11, Bb/Ab, also chromatics using power chords (root 5th only) or 7ths or 9th shapes: C-B-Bb, or Db-C-Bb, and going up, F-Gm-Bb/Ab, or D7/F#-Gm-Bb/Ab.....and of course the "cambio" which is used for cante too sometimes, the E7, and and even F7 or Cm7 can be tossed in the mix....not to mention just doing some interesting rhythms on the basic chord cadence. The famous Paco chord works too:

3
3
5
3
4
3

too many options almost....just think por medio as per solea buleria or fandango. Just be careful not to OVER do it cuz, then it ain't siguiriyas anymore.

Cool! That's a new one to me. That barre 3 por medio Paco hotspot is full of good stuff. These are the ones I know:

I guess those are Gm and Gm7 and work as passing chords, though I'm not a theory wiz so that may not be accurate.

Bflat and Bflat7, if I'm not mistaken. I've been using that last one with the addition of a hammered off third string/fifth fret note in siguiriyas for a nice effect.

Sorry I'm not better able to describe the chords and where they go, but if you play around with them your ear should tell you where they'll fit.

The possibilities are endless. Jason's video points to some por medio harmony ideas:
